Canada Says Housing Crisis Needs More Immigrants To Fix

An increasingly controversial topic has people asking the minister of immigration about immigration targets and Canadas Housing crisis

 

In 2022 the population grew over 1 Million even tho only 220,000 housing units were built, a pace that is insufficient to keep up with demand.

 

The minister said last week the targets will not be lowered if anything they will increase as the need for labor grows

 

Next year the targets are set at 451,000 immigrants and in 2025 will be 500,000

 

The minister says there is a labor shortage in contruction and that immigration may on a net basis actually help fix the housing crisis by bringing in skilled labor to build homes

 

Tho not mentioned in this linked article, construction jobs were down last month and not because of layoffs, but the disproportionately high rate of retirees as nearly 1/3 of construction workers are 55 or older

So this is to mean they're screening immigrants to see if they work construction jobs? Cuz trades aren't exactly easy to get into like...

Tragic

They’re literally not bringing in construction workers tho. It’s just students trying to get white collar jobs, their families, and millionaires who can already afford the crazy prices of the city. Might be controversial but maybe start immigrating only construction workers bc imagine upping all this immigration w no houses or healthcare, and yet construction jobs still go down

Thats what i was thinking. He never mentioned anything about specifically targeting construction workers. The comment about skills felt very generalized. Im sure its included in the formula but it doesnt sound like they are especially targeted

 

As for what you said @Flapjack about it being difficult i dont think thays true. Theres been a labir shortage in construction for a long time and many companies are willing to work with apprentiship programs to help recruit new people new to the industry

 

naturally it will be harder to get ur foot in the door when ur brand new. But thats literally like every job. I dont think construction is harder than other industries necessairily

Im not conservative supporter but im having a hard time imagining how they are gonna make it worse. The only thing i can think of is if they tried to encourage more international investment in realestate but even that, evidence has shown the perception that foreign buyers are the reason for high prices is at best greatly exagerated

 

Its not like liberals in Canada historically have done such a great job with their housing policies including at Provincial. Theres a reason Canada ranked 2nd worst in a study for OECD Nations in competitiveness when it comes to construction approvals

 

Complicated regulation, duplicated processes at different levels of government and long wait times makes construction approval slow with all that red tape and that has not helped

 

But i applaud they finally are recognizing that and thats one of the things they are trying to fix

Outrageous housing costs in large cities has been a thing since 2012. It’s incredible to me that it took lawmakers over a decade to come up with a “reason” why housing is so ****ing expensive. I can only speak for California, but if housing shortages were caused by zoning limitations or labor shortages, why are they barely tackling the issue now in 2023? It’s like this wasn’t really a priority for them until now. Democrats will lose their hold on California if this keeps going on here too.

I'm not in that sector so I didn't know, but if that's the case, then they really should be cultivating a skillset for people I'm sure are wanting to work and make good money. A lot of the skilled labor they are bringing in are people who need to re-license while here which literally prevents them from doing their job (doctors being some of the craziest cases). I think it would be smart for the government to work with sectors that require workers and also have learning opportunities to literally just have streamlined programs for people to come in and work, it's a win-win but who knows how challenging that would be (read as how competent anyone in leadership is willing to be).

Construction workers should be easier to absorb than doctors. They are mostly run by private companies and by law dont require certifications like doctors especially starter positions in construction which already start at good rates.

 

But they need to bring them in
