The Original BTW 3rd Single: Marry The Night

Gaga said she wanted Marry The Night, Born This Way, Scheiße and The Edge of Glory but I don’t remember there being a MTN 3rd single stickers or so. There has always been messy situations behind the scenes that have made them change their mind about what to pick.

I never really liked the idea of Judas being the second single, I personally think the label chose it because of the dark beats - which was kinda' reminiscent of The Fame Monster esp. Bad Romance. I would probably make Marry The Night as the second single. My dream single line-up as follows:

1. Born This Way

2. Marry The Night

- promo single -

3. Scheiße *album release*

4. The Edge of Glory

5. Highway Unicorn *2012 release / tour single*

I'd probably insert Bloody Mary somewhere if she wanted to explore the religious themes of the album on its own, then maybe Government Hooker or another song as a promo single before the album release.

Going back to Marry The Night, I'm pretty sure Gaga wanted it to be an earlier single. I'm not sure what the GP would think of it (if it would smash) but I'm sure it'll bring a different sound to the radio + I think it was a better song to represent the sound of the album. Imagine a Nick Knight directed video for Marry The Night:giveup:

There was! In the earlier prints of the album it says Marry The Night rather than The Edge of Glory:

She definitely wanted it as the lead, but BTW was really the only choice as BTW’s lead single given its message.

I wonder if it was the label that pushed Judas as the second single.. I believe they only went with TEOG as the 3rd after it performed really well as a promo single. As if upon first listen no-one at Interscope picked TEOG as a monster hit :toofunny:

I like it! Mine is similar to yours except it is the same 5 singles in different order:

1. Born This Way (February 2011)

2. Marry The Night (April 2011)

*no promo singles*

ALBUM DROP (May 2011)

3. You And I  (June 2011)

4. The Edge Of Glory (September 2011)

5. Judas (January 2012)

MTN is the rightful heir to follow BTW and would have been GREAT as the 2nd single! No promo singles so MTN could shine on its own. I would release "You And I" a few weeks after the album release since it was popular. TEOG would've been another popular album track and release it a few months after YaI. Would sell the album and keep the momentum until the New Year. Finally Judas released during the New year 2012 to start it off with a controversial bang and hype for the tour. The video would be more controversial and would leave people people craving more controversial Gaga for the next era.

TEOG was the right choice but honestly it could've been release later and still done well, it's that great of a song.

I believe it was release as single #3 because it did really well when release as a promo single before the album came out. Same reason DWUW was switched as single #2 instead of Venus

that’s exactly what happened. i was there.  tbh the singles should have been  that’s also why it didn’t peak even higher - the sales peaked while radio was still catching up due to the switched release

Born This Way

You and I

TEOG

If I could have Little Manager'd the BTW era, I would have skipped Judas as a single. That song always seemed like the "record label executive special" -- written specifically to try and recapture the magic of Poker Face and Bad Romance. I think that's where the whole era went awry, was in choosing a playfully blasphemous "sex with Jesus" type of song as the 2nd single, released right at Easter when everyone in America suddenly remembers they are a God-fearing Christian for a couple weeks :laughga: Should have gone straight from BTW to Marry The Night, TEoG, or even You and I! I think HML would have made a better "sexy dance single" than Judas.

I distinctly remember her telling people in the LM website chat room that the original order of singles she pitched to the label was;

Marry The Night

Born This Way

Scheiße

The Edge of Glory

and of memory serves me right the title track was to come out around the time the album did.

This sounds about right. It's been known that MTN was supposed to be lead single. I think it was also supposed to be the last track in order.

At some point Gaga decided how important BTW was and decided to use that as lead single. I'm still convinced from her 2010 VMA preview that Born This Way was an entirely different song originally.

I don't think TEOG was supposed to ever be a single. The promo singles were purposely released as album teasers that they knew they wouldn't be used as singles. Same happened with Dark Horse for Katy.

Wasn't it the first song she released through FarmVille??? i think that counts as a promo single prior to album release

What I don’t understand is how record labels don’t understand which songs on the album are the hits well in advance of the singles and promo cycle starting? You’d think they would do focus group type-testing with a decent sample size to actually have a strong idea of which songs the public is going to respond the most to. Maybe some labels do, but it feels like that has never happened with Gaga, and it’s definitely hurt her commercially
