Future Sound Asia (FSA), the organisers of Good Vibes Festival 2023, have announced that they will be officially taking legal action against British pop rock band The 1975, which will be sued for words and actions that the country views as offensive.

This comes after the band’s frontman, Matt Healy, gave a speech on his disappointment in the country’s discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, before pulling his bassist in for a kiss. This inevitably led to the festival’s cancellation, as per orders from the Malaysian government.

In a statement, the music festival organisers have issued Letter of Claim to The 1975, demanding that the band acknowledge their liability and compensate FSA for the damages incurred due to their actions. In addition to that, they have also stated that if the band does not comply with their requests, they will pursue legal proceedings in the Courts of England.

According to FSA, The 1975’s actions at the Good Vibes Festival 2023 breached Malaysian laws and guidelines, causing damage to the festival’s reputation. In particular, lead singer Matt Healy’s use of abusive language, equipment damage, and indecent stage behaviour not only flagrantly breached local guidelines and Malaysian laws but also tarnished the reputation of the 10-year-old festival.

The organizer of Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival is seeking over $2 million in damages from the 1975 after frontman Matty Healy’s on-stage protest against the country’s anti-LGBTQ laws resulted in authorities canceling the event.
The shutdown resulted in numerous bands and small businesses on the bill — including local artists and global acts such as the Strokes — kicked to the curb.
A legal counsel for Future Sound Asia issued a letter addressing a “breach of contract” on behalf of the 1975 that requests the band provide compensation for the agency’s losses after the cancellation of the annual, three-day event.
According to the letter issued Aug. 8, the band has a limited number of days to present compensation.

Whenever I feel sad or worried about homophobia in my country (England, UK) I always remember all of those living in countries where being yourself is still illegal and I feel so awful. It must be terrifying.

Chromatica will live on forever.

as a festival that booked them i'm not sure what they expected. matty in particular has been incredibly controversial on stage for years now, the 'abusive language, equipment damage and indecent behaviour' is something he does at literally every concert. you don't book the 1975 if you want a conservative, polite act. the 1975 really aren't at fault when they were basically just doing their usual stage routine, if you don't want that then don't book them.

I don't wanna be like "oh artists should never go to those countries anymore" because it's unfair for their fans living there but also the artists should not accept to perform in certain countries if they do not agree with the laws or the laws will affect their essence or performance, they should not be dealing with this kind of censorship

this. artists shouldn't have to compromise on their values to perform somewhere. there's a difference between an artist being respectful and covering up a little or performing clean versions of their songs and artists being sued and banned for saying something that's a publicly known value of theirs.

we saw the nasty side of what can happen with gaga in jakarta and i think more artists should follow the lead of playing it safe with their tour dates. if nothing else i personally think this is why singapore was taylor's only southeast asian date, because indonesia or malaysia would've been too restrictive when it comes to songs like you need to calm down.

if the cancellation resulted from the homophobic reaction, the festival should ask damages from the homophobic groups and institutions.
