During an appearance on the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast, Tom said he realized he might have an alcohol problem after having “a very, very boozy” Christmas.

“I felt like I couldn’t be social,” he said. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling. I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”

He mentions how happy he was after hitting 6 months of sobriety. “I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter… I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?'”

After being sober for over a year now, he also mentions that his mom was inspired to stop drinking alcohol as well.

Congrats on almost 11 months!!

I wish more young celebs would openly discuss the seriousness of substance abuse.

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

Good for him. I drink much less than I used to but not sober by any means. It’s very good to be conscious of it and critically examine your relationship with drugs of all forms.

As Gaga once said … “I flirt with the idea of sobriety“ 😅

drinking obscene amounts is so normalised in the UK, i don't think many people realise they actually have a drinking issue

i stopped when i was 20/21 because i realised the hangovers were too depressing and blacking out was just too scary

mother, what must i do?

I wish more celebs were vocal about substance abuse. We always see/hear them glamorizing it, but very rarely do we see them discussing the dark side of it

I've been sober for years. Tom is right: All the bargaining and stress and exhaustion and drama for what? One more drink? Eh, I was so over it.

Good for him for cutting out something that wasn't bringing him any joy. Wish him the best. And anyone else who feels sobriety might be the right path.

This is incredible and I’m wishing him the best. There’s so much I want to say, but it’s hard to find the words just yet.
I’m an alcoholic in recovery, 2 years august 13th!!!! Anyone struggling with addiction, you are supported and loved and understood. Even when you feel you’re not, and a lot of times it can feel that way. Every day is a struggle, but we get through and just know, like Jamie Lee Curtis said, “that’s why it’s called recovery, not recovered”. I wish anyone on that path or veering towards that path the very best
