After months of speculation, TikTok is finally launching its own “social music streaming service,” initially in Indonesia and Brazil, the company announced Thursday, with licensing from all three major music companies.

The service, hich is premium-only, will allow users to synch with their existing accounts and also share and download the tracks they discover on TikTok. The service is now available in both countries with a one-month free trial, according to

The new service will replace the company’s existing streaming service, Resso, on Sept. 5. The transition began in May, which TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, announced that Resso would become a premium-only service.

The move is a major one for any number of reasons, as TikTok has been the major source of music discovery for several years and the company’s launch of a new streaming service has long been expected. There was no word initially on when it will launch in other territories, but it would seem to be coming sooner rather than later.

TikTok Music lets users sync the service to their existing TikTok accounts and listen, download and share songs. The service includes the catalogs of major record companies, including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music.

TikTok Music lets you play full versions of viral TikTok songs, discover personalized music recommendations, access lyrics in real time, create collaborative playlists with friends, import your music library and find songs via lyrics search. The service also includes a Shazam-like feature that can identify music that you’re listening to. Like Spotify Premium, TikTok Music lets users download songs for offline listening. The service also includes social features, as TikTok notes that users can express themselves through comments and connect with other music lovers.

Users can import their libraries and playlists from other streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.

When asked if TikTok plans to launch the streaming service in the United States, a spokesperson for the company said TikTok doesn’t have anything to share at the moment. “We are excited about the opportunities for TikTok Music, for music fans, artists and the industry, but we don’t have any more news to share on future plans,” the spokesperson said in an email.

How much is TikTok Music?

Brazil:

R$ 16.9 ($3.49) per month

Indonesia:

49,000 rupiah ($3.25) per month on iOS

44,900 rupiah ($2.96) per month on Android for the first year, then 49,000 rupiah

This pricing undercuts Spotify Premium in both countries, which is priced at R$ 19.90 in Brazil and 49,990 rupiah in Indonesia. However, with no free tier, TikTok Music may struggle to gain initial interest.

There's a lot I don't like about Tik Tok but I'm always down for more competition to reduce monopolies and keeping profit margins under control so us peasents don't overpay more than we have to :vegas:

I'll keep up with Spotify. I used Tidal, Deezer, Apple Music, but they were all bad (especially Tidal - my fav song was not even published there so it was automatically a NO).

The last thing the world need is another music streaming platform (especially from TikTok)... and also any new beauty brands :excusemeno:

I had Spotify but earlier this year cancelled it to try YT premium. I still miss many things Spotify offers but I killed two birds with one stone moving to YT. I don't have annoying adds before every video or adds in general, and I can listen to music not only available on their music platform but also on the videos one.

I don't think I'm switching to another platform anytime soon unless they can offer something better.

Thought they were trying to ban the Chinese spyware app? Sooner that app is gone the better. It’s just full of bot content.

Been using YT music for a few months and I love it, mostly bc I can listen to unreleased songs not avalaible on spotify. Now the comment feature in tiktok music seems really nice, and ive been wondering why spotify never did this. I always scroll through comments on songs from YouTube and I've always thought it would be nice to do the same on Spotify/YT music

The price is quite similar to Spotify and AM here in Brazil, I don’t think TikTok is coming for them competition-wise

Good stay there and don't brign your horrible taste on spotify, AM, etc by influencing the official charts all over the world.

Thank you.

I didn't say it was going to lower prices from current levels. But more players in an industry is always good competition wise

If one of them decided they wanted to hike prices all of a sudden by a lot, they have to consider their competition

Apple Music forever

I have Apple Music and I don't know really what happened a few months ago but begin to absolutely HATE the algorithm. Even when I listen to songs that aren't even pop the algorithm most of the time comes back to overplayed pop songs and they're always the same. Mostly Dua, Beyonce, Britney, Ariana and Gaga's biggest hits from TF/TFM... it's been getting really annoying as of lately.
