I disagreee with your last sentence and I find the whole "there are other ways" patronising and upsetting, specially knowing the context in France

I'm mad at this thread bc the focus is on burnt cars and a few business being looted. I'm not downplaying it, but it is indeed minimal compared to what the police have done to this child and so many others for years (and is doing to the rioters/protesters rn). Businesses have insurance, the lives of young POC in France do not.

to show more concern or dismay over this is indeed, for me, proof of complacency in the face of police violence and racism. in any case, to turn this thread into a conversation about "how these People don't understand anything and are using the wrong techniques to assert their right" (hardly an exaggeration, it's the thread's subtext) is extremely ignorant and stupid.

FYI it's the techniques used by the right to sidestep the problem and legitimize extreme right-wing theories.

not talking about u specifically tho I didn't even see what u posted or anything you just quoted me so

I think the concern might be predominantly because again it’s innocent people that are going to be facing the responsibility for the damage that these rioters caused. Like the businesses having insurance is a fair point, but still, that’s quite a mess to clean up that wasn’t necessary at all. Stealing isn’t okay either. A residential building with innocent people living in it was lit on fire. I just don’t see how that’s ever justifiable, it’s literally putting those people (who did nothing wrong) and also the rioters themselves in danger. It’s not like these rioters simply vandalized a bus stop or two and caused some commotion in a busy area, it’s far more than that.

I also think the reason why there’s in general a lot of attention paid to the damage caused in riots is because people usually have to live and commute through those areas that are being vandalized during these riots, therefore it affects them much more.

I’m sorry if my comment came across as patronizing, but I just genuinely feel like this will only cause more problems and takes away from the actual problem that needs to be addressed.

FYI it's the deflecting techniques used by the right to sidestep the problem and legitimize extreme right-wing theories, just like after G. Floyd in the US.

idk if people here deflect it intentionally or not (some sure are), I'm just flagging it bc I can

Well the thread and OP is specifically about the protests and riots. Naturally most comments are going to be about that...

Just like the thread on the cop-child incident predominantly has comments on the issue itself. So I don't think the comparison "there's more comments and attention to the riots than the child" is fair. This thread is about ppls reactions to it not the situation itself so of course more comments will be directed toward that

If an OP was about both simultaneously "cop kills child, violent riots breakout" and you disproportionately had more comments concerned about the riots than the lost life then I'd have a point but given the threads are seperate u are comparing apples to oranges

I also do not believe anger being justified should give ppl a free pass to react however they please. If u start to shame or make it a taboo for ppl calling out negative behavior by gas lighting them and accusing them that it therefore means they don't care about the incident, u start to set a precedent that bad bahviour can't get called out

It's possible to care about both simultaneously and comment about both at different times. It doesn't always have to be only one or the other. That's a result of extreme black and white thinking that's very common in politics or social issues of today where u seen to only be allowed to hyper focus on one angle at a time and ignore everything else entirely otherwise ur accused of being "on the other side"

I also wanna point out that if looking at both threads u find this one still has more discussion, remember that anything that is controversial by nature tends to get more discussion and replies. If u are all in agreement there's a lot less to say... I'd like to believe the vast majority of ppl on GGD are already in unanimous agreement that what the cop did was dispicable, so u don't get caught up on replies back and fourth because there's no one ur trying to convince of anything. The riots on the other hand, have a degree of controversy, while it seems like clearly more than half are against them, enough are in support of them that there is a controversy here and as such, a debate

That always happens. Why do u think news about a celebrity misleading (ex: accidentally misgenders someone) gets a lot more heated discussion than hearing there was a homicide in your city???? Do the majority of ppl actually believe a misgender (by accident) is a more serious crime than murder? Yet it will have more discussion why? Because everyone already agrees a homicide is terrible. So there's nothing to discuss. But opinions vary on whether the celebs statements were serious enough to cancel or not, so there's heated debate

So I find the idea of trying to gage how much ppl care about something based on how much discussion there is about something to be a very flawed way to look at it. The amount of traffic discussion on something often can be propelled by controversy more so than how much ppl care.

The fact that ppl comment once or twice about the incident itself can be a good thing. It means no one had to reply to someone disagreeing with them because the unanimous opinions against the cop means there's no controversy there and everyone is already in full agreement that the cop is sick in the head.

Unless you are ONLY concerned with the riots and not the police officer I don't think u did anything wrong.

U are allowed to comment on both issues without automatically being seen as downplaying the other

Like I said in my reply above, this thread is about the riots so naturally most comments are going to be predominantly about what ppl think of the riots themselves

If the thread about the cop incident itself had ppl mostly downplaying or ignoring the situation and instead focusing more on the riots, then I'd say he had a point.

But going on a thread that is posting on the news of the after affect reactions of the incident and getting upset that ppl are talking about the after affect incident reactions... Seems silly.
