Rioting In France (5th Day)

A tense atmosphere lingered in Nanterre on Saturday following the funeral of a French teenager who was fatally shot by police in the Paris suburb earlier this week. 

Arrests continued to mount with more than 1,300 people detained Friday overnight into Saturday and another 121 people arrested Saturday during the fifth night of nationwide protests in France after the 17-year-old’s death, according to the French Interior Ministry. 

The boy’s mother, Mounia, told television station France 5 on Friday that she blamed only the officer who shot her son, Nahel Merzouk, for his death. Nonetheless, the killing has sparked widespread destructive unrest and questions over whether race was a factor in his death. 

Protests continued into the early hours of Saturday in defiance of a ban announced a day earlier on all “large-scale events” in the country, with rioting breaking out in several cities, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported.

France’s Interior Ministry said Saturday that1,311 people had been detained following the fourth night of violence, an update on its previous figure. It said 2,560 fires had been reported on public roads, with 1,350 cars burned, and that there had been 234 incidents of damage or fire in buildings.

France activated 45,000 police and gendarmes across the country Saturday night, according to the country’s interior minister, Gérald Darmanin. 

Social media videos of scenes in Lyon, geolocated by CNN, showed rapid gunfire from an automatic rifle at night, fireworks being released at a protest and demonstrators next to burning fires.

The Interior Ministry said it would send its elite unit of riot police, CRS 8, to Lyon on Saturday night as it seeks to clamp down on the violence.

More than 700 businesses across France have been damaged since the start of the protests, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said at a news conference Saturday. The businesses, which include shopping centers and bank branches, have been attacked, looted or in some cases, burned to the ground, he said.

The sad thing is to see this energy here directed at small grocery stores/ schools/ youth houses/ healthcare buses in the poor blocks since we also saw some of these burned...

Same with infrastructures used for public services, especially in poor blocks, burning it ain't bringing more social justice, rather the opposite actually since it's the poors, often POC dealing with consequences, again.

I agree that you need to shake things up to get results with these crooks but if they want to burn stuffs I wish it would be the current government party's offices instead...

The cop who did it is in jail now but it's momentary. He gonna have a trial.

The proofs against him are damning so I don't see how he could escape a condemnation... If he does that would be a shame but the guy apologized to the victim's family so I doubt he even intend to play innocent or deny his responsibility in the death.

Some cities have established a curfew, parisian bus and trams are stopped from 9pm to 6am. I can witness some fires and fights in my own city but its not every night. Once again french people and their government feels disconnected. Just as the last pension protests and the protests before and the yellow jackets.. french people will get nothing but the usual contempt or denial from Macron and his friends.
They will let those riots die slowly like they always do. What's really worrying is that those riots are full of young people

Many of these people just enjoy the riots to go steal stuffs since cops are already hella busy at night.

These precise ones dgaf about what happened to the teenager killed.

I live in Bezons which is right next to Nanterre... And near my house, they've burned a school and several cars and buses, lot of shops were destroyed.. Lots of fireworks too. Some said "we'll come back for your houses" while burning a car in front of my house and destroying the other with iron bars, they also assaulted my neighbor  

I didn't sleep well for 5 days

I've yet to meet a level-headed and genuine person that takes part in riots. 

It's just a weird mixture of thugs, theives, pseudo-terrorists and self-centered SJWs. It's unjust that we can't pass them the bill for all the damage they cause to public safety, businesses and services. 

Hopefully, the French police can get it under control. There's other ways to solve problems than causing chaos that endangers the innocent.

Target government buildings connected to law enforcement on police stations if u feel u have to take up the heat. Why direct it to innocent ppl?

This. Did u hear the laughing and stuff in some of the videos? That doesn't sound like someone who is upset over the situation. It sounds like someone who is genuinely having fun destroying and getting free stuff

 

If ur gonna go down the road of destruction, at least target something relevant like a police station or something. Or a government office connected to the countries law enforcement. That way u still get ur point across and more so without hurting innocent ppl in the process. But there's no free stuff in it for the looters so of course that's not what they target

 

Independent stores and random ppls cars? I'm shocked about 50% of ppl here are applauding this and naming it "positive energy we need"
