Rioting In France (5th Day)

This is so sad. The whole situation. It’s awful that a teenager was killed and if it’s police brutality I hope justice prevails and the victims family gets peace.  It’s also awful that so many people are being negatively impacted by riots beyond the intended targets of these riots.  Is anyone here from Paris? Is it also happening there? If someone was going to travel to Paris in a few weeks should they  should cancel tor postpone the trip?

This. Did u hear the laughing and stuff in some of the videos? That doesn't sound like someone who is upset over the situation. It sounds like someone who is genuinely having fun destroying and getting free stuff

Oh yeah it's crazy how some of them lack basic humanity laughing at folks getting beaten down, cars burning when it's the only relatively expensive thing the broke owners have etc...

If ur gonna go down the road of destruction, at least target something relevant like a police station or something. Or a government office connected to the countries law enforcement. That way u still get ur point across and more so without hurting innocent ppl in the process. But there's no free stuff in it for the looters so of course that's not what they target :madge:

I mean quite a lot of police station were targeted too but yeah seing the numerous shops that were burned... Clearly many aren't about social justice whatsoever.

Independent stores and random ppls cars? I'm shocked about 50% of ppl here are applauding this and naming it "positive energy we need"

And even a school + a cheap discount store so it will force the poor folks from this block to go elsewhere and pay more to eat...

I understand why they like to see people protest strongly against unfairness but I hope they didn't realize it was the property of broke folks being impacted.

Other than that.......

I live in Bezons which is right next to Nanterre... And near my house, they've burned a school and several cars and buses, lot of shops were destroyed.. Lots of fireworks too. Some said "we'll come back for your houses" while burning a car in front of my house and destroying the other with iron bars, they also assaulted my neighbor :vegas:

I didn't sleep well for 5 days :motherofpuppies:

Omg, I am so sorry you had to go through that horror :bradley:

What in The Purge is this?

I’m sorry but how is setting fires to residential buildings, stealing vehicles and breaking into ATM’s any kind of beneficial to the justice of that teen that was killed??? I’m sure there are some protesters doing things the right way that doesn’t involve ridiculous self-beneficial extreme criminal activity. Seems to me like most of these people are just using the teens death as an excuse to hopefully get away with being mischievous self-indulged losers.

Noone riots like the French!

This is the energy we need to present in the face of corruption in the legal system tbh

We need more of this energy in the USA. Politicians don't fear us anymore like they need to.

Rioting and destroying innocent buildings is wrong, but some of the replies in this thread are giving alt-right only focusing on the damage and not the root of the problem.

They burnt the metro station near my house. The government sent the anti-terrorists forces in my town, it was completly surreal but it seems that it’s getting more calm since yesterday.

I understand the anger but burning schools, buses or grocery shops is just stupid and counter-productive. This will backfire at them and only benefit to the far-right parties :saladga:

Exactly, it's punishing the poorest folks from the hood as an answer to a cop who killed a teenager from the hood... Senseless.

Yes Macron did so terrible with both improving the suburbs life and containing the riots that indeed it's Legend who gonna enjoy it.

It’s much safer that some other cities such as Lyon Marseille or Strasbourg where things got real bad. Most of the riots in Paris are actually happening in the suburbs, but you’ll be fine in the main city. Also the whole situation seems to get better this week-end, I don’t think that you should cancel the trip, just stay aware of the events.

Violent protest is valid against violent systematic injustice and always has been. It's been the way civilization has taken important progressive steps every step of the way so far and I believe the reason we've stalled out in that field is because much of the world has been indoctrinated into believing the opposite of that fact due to the bastardization and skewed teachings of MLK Jr.'s words. If you'll remember, he recognized riots as the voice of the unheard, almost swapped ideologies with Malcolm X by the end, and ️still️ got murdered while labeled violent + the most hated man in the country.

I'm a staunch pacifist, cry for the innocents being harmed, and hate that it came to this; but human beings don't lash out like this en mass unless they're trapped in an environment that has pushed them to it. So I'm sorry you feel the way you do, but your feelings aren't the reality of the situation.:vegas:

I'm not French, but I fear this is playing into the cards of the right-wing parties which are gaining weight all over Europe recently, so these riots will probably bring the contrary of what those rioting are wishing for.

It's one thing to rightfully demonstrate and show your frustration, but it's something completely different just to be plain violent and destroy private peoples stuff. That's absolutely not it.

I agree with that since it happens after many peaceful demands were endlessly ignored but here a large part of the violent protest sanctions the poor ( often POC ) people who lives in the blocks where most of police brutality happens... If they want to defend them from racists/ anti-poors acts why are they making their lifes worst?

If it was violence against the government's symbolical places over the current government doing nothing to fix this injustice ( like the former ones) I would get it but here it's the minority. :/

Valid according to who?

Besides, the argument often gets thrown around as if violence is the only way to progress on issues meanwhile the violent times seem to coincide when change is already occuring in many cases simply because ppl are frustrated it's not progressing as fast as they'd like but it doesn't prove the violence is what made the progress

In some extreme situations like dictatorships or whatnot maybe there's nothing else u can possibly do, but in a society like France, I find it hard to believe burning innocent peoples property is somehow the "valid" or the only way to push for change.

Besides, we live in a world of social media where stuff like this is often gonna go viral... And in a society of 8 billion ppl no matter how much progress is made there's always going to be isolated cases like this even if we reduce them significantly

Resorting to this everytime is not a sustainable long term solution and I fear it's increasingly brushed off as the norm and acceptable valid way to voice ur frustrations. Ur gonna end up hurting more ppl in the process than the people your supposibly claiming to help

Again, id like to see u still support this if it was ur car destroyed. I seriously doubt ud still defend it so easily after that
