One of the world's most common artificial sweeteners is set to be declared a possible carcinogen next month by a leading global health body, according to two sources with knowledge of the process, pitting it against the food industry and regulators.

Aspartame, used in products from Coca-Cola diet sodas to Mars' Extra chewing gum and some Snapple drinks, will be listed in July as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" for the first time by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization's (WHO) cancer research arm, the sources said.

This is not the news I wanted to wake up to as someone that regularly buys a 12 packs of Coke Zero. :fatcat:

We already knew it's worse for you than sugar, so this isn't surprising at all.

Is this true? I heard it years ago but had to double check now

"Apparently the E. coli are grown in tanks and, as they defecate, their fecal matter is harvested because it contains aspartic acid-phenylalanine amino acid –the protein needed to make the aspartame. These fecal proteins are then treated with methanol to produce the artificial sweetener."

We all could afford to pay more attention to what we consume, especially in the US since the gov seemingly doesn't care if we perish, and the FDA is essentially a facade to make us feel protected when we're really not

And yet in the UK we have a sugar tax encouraging drinks and food companies to replace sugar with carcinogenic artificial ones to avoid the tax :vegas:

To my knowledge in the UK there are only three soft drinks that don't contain any sweetener, Coke, Pepsi and MTN Dew, every other brand even the full fat ones such as Fanta, Dr Pepper etc have half sugar half sweetener to comply with the sugar tax.

I’ve been wanting to switch to Diet Coke because of less calories/sugar but have been questioning it. (Especially since I hope to be pregnant in the near future.) I guess I’ll stick to my regular coke but in moderation.

I remember the minute Coca Zero was released, my dad was like "nope, stick to the regular one in small quantities, it's always better than that".
