Well, the wait to the album was standard for the time. But yeah they should have been more confident in the era and leaned away from Darkga. The singles should have been BTW, TEOG, Y&I, and MTN. MAYBE Hair. This isn’t bc I especially like those but they’re clearly the most commercial tracks on the album and the 80s arena rock sounds were among the era’s most popular. She should have steered clear of Judas, as good as it is. The album didn’t need so much promo, I agree! Especially as it was a success upon release.

IMO they shouldve released only 2 singles before the  álbum and no promo singles. The 3rd single should've been the most popular song which would go to YAI and be immidiately released. Something like this couldve worked:

1. Born This Way (February 2011) Light promo/ interviews. Perfect start! Mostly quiet to keep the suspense.

2. Marry The Night (Late April 2011) Random release, light promo and video released shortly after. Performed along BTW and quickly hits Top 3.

(ALBUM Release) May. 23.  2011

3. You And I (June 2011) Highly performed during the summer and at the VMA's with a music video at the beach. Laid-back summer bop.

4. The Edge Of Glory (September 2011) Low-key promo at first but then picks up during the holidays/end of the year. Keeps the momentum going for the era and a huge album seller.

5. Judas (January 2012) A return to DarkGa after four 80's inspired bops, the video is highly anticipated and is released as a huge fan favorite. Buzz and hype around this one, light promotion.

6. Hair or Heavy Metal Lover (April 2012)  Nobody would care at this point so why not? With a cheap music video and the tour happening, this would be a nice treat for the fans!

I agree the promo singles made no sense whatsoever. A single IS promotional like…conceptually the era of those made no mf sense and just stalled the building hype bc think on it and we heard part of or all of 9 songs before the album release. Like ofc the era had no legs. Troy managed that era like **** tbh he really did not know what to do with her once she was big per his own smug admission but I wouldn’t be so high and mighty about it when that’s the problem of you as manager not the artist. If you can’t **** then got off the pot. He overstayed his use on the Gaga brand tbh

id still steer clear of Judas, personally, but I otherwise think the singles work though I’d swap MTN and TEOG. That song was a summer BOP. It had LEGS. The fact that basically on its own merits and the situation working against it, it managed #3 is impressive. It could easily have been one if it was a proper second single. So to that end, I’d not be rushing out another single by June as remember that California Gurls was also an April release and was a summer anthem.

I’d let it breathe and my single release cadence would have been:

February-mid April

Mid April-August

~~ALBUM DROP~~

August-November

To me, the album release issue was that she was EVERYWHERE and always pushing new stuff and not taking her time to let something breathe and conceive interesting or unique performances. So it started to get a bit of a churn for audiences.

if the album did THAT well then she could have added more singles but 3 spaced out like this with adjustments as necessary made feels fine and apt imo

R Kelly. I completely understand that we all make poor judgments, where she was at at the time, and that she apologized (I think it was genuine and heartfelt). But I’m still not completely over it.

aah came here to say this, dwyw could have been so big and iconic  the hit that got away, it kills me to watch the performances with rkelly

... and now i just sit in silence.

I think Troy just wanted to make his money fast and quick.. Its understandable but Gaga was A-list and before BTW her videos and music were managed very professionally. He should have seen the longterm effect instead of short term. They tried to forcefully make this album her "Thriller" and make it sell loads but instead it was just frontloaded. If you push too much too quick, there is a free fall. No wonder the era lost steam mid-way . By the time of Judas, her brand was already a gimmick and her team was comfortable with that so they kept pushing. Until the unexpected underperformance forced them to change course and mess up the era. They shouldve seen this coming tbh. Why not "rebrand" Gaga as a vocalist and fancy popstar for BTW instead of continuing DarkGa from TFM? Just so many mistakes! The hype got to their heads.

The only reason I would quickly release the 3rd single after the album release  (especially YaI) is to ride the hype of the album and make it a hit as it quickly hit top 10 on iTunes upon the release. Not wait until late August as I think it would "stall" the era.
