It wasn't entirely a criticism. Beyonce has always been a bit more experimental with her music, and that has worked immensely well for her, she's praised as a visionary, but it does take some time to get used to her music. Her singles before Renaissance used to pale commercially in comparison with her peers' like Taylor, Gaga, Adele who had a more commercial approach.

Yeah I’m…confused. Single Ladies alone was a reset. It became an instant classic. The other ones as well. I’d argue Beyoncé wasn’t that experimental until it came to self titled onward. Prior to that she kept it fairly strictly pop rnb to great success lmao even her “minor singles like if I were a boy, beautiful liar, etc. are still big songs.
