This is different. Shakira registered as a Spanish citizen in 2015 and has been paying everything since then. But years later Hacienda said she should have been paying since 2011 (later on 2011 was disproven by receipts so they kept pushing for 2012-2014), and even though her advisors told her it wasnt needed, she paid the sum upfront to avoid any confusion.

But then they asked for a fine and started a nasty media witchhunt against her, leaking things that were supposed to be kept confidential to the press to make her look bad and force her to pay another 20-something million fine.

That's when she decided she would rather go to trial as all this is damaging to her reputation, and she can't afford such a thing as, besides being a musician, she is also the face of a foundation that depends on her credibility, so she will fight this to prove she was innocent all along.

Paying the fine and moving on would be worse, as it would be accepting a punishment for a crime she's sure she didnt commit.

We'll see what the outcome is but if Shakira ends up winning this it would be extremely embarrassing and set a horrible precedent for Hacienda going forward, so they better have the receipts lined up if they're confident she's guilty

Amazon doesn't come up with ridiculous excuses for not paying tax

No government will accept "I lived on a plane, not in Spain" as a reason for not needing to pay tax

She claimed to be living in tax heaven, the Bahamas, where residents are not required to pay tax on income earned elsewhere and provided fake water and electricity bills to Spain’s tax office but she wasn't in the Bahamas for even a day in 2012-2014. She has destroyed her own reputation.

she basically moved to Spain after she started dating Pique. 2011 was disproven because she was on tour but then she gave up her career to start a family with Pique, her first son was born in Barcelona in January 2013, her second in January 2015 and only then she decided to pay her taxes. There are lots of photos of Shakira going to recording studios, parties, shops, restaurants, clinics, strolling, her parents, friends visiting her .... in Spain in 2012-2014. even her fans who follow her career don't think she can win.

Just a question:

All those of you who say that evading taxes is overdramatic and not so serious, have you ever heard about what happened to the Mediterranean countries (especially Greece) over the past decade?

Taxes (provided the government isn't into corruption) are used for paying salaries of the public servants, the pensions, the insurance, public schools and hospitals etc. If taxes can't be collected legally on time, the economic system may degrade to the point of failure. From that point on is all a domino. How entitled can a human being be to condemn those who have the 1% of his/her net worth? 

So yeah, taxes have to be paid, receipts have to be printed & we should be more conscious of the world around us.
