Okay I completely passed the racism comment under the bus.

but now i really want to understand why is it that having a problem with the imagery of the New mermaid being black and not having bright red hair, has mostly nothing to with racism. Ofc a conflict of internal racism might surface but the most obvs response is that people have an image of the little mermaid.
im now completely used to Halle  being the mermaid but def took a bit to get used. Sierra borges was my idea of the little mermaid.
All this to say that its not exactly racism to get alienated from the project when the main character isnt the idea of what people expected. This would still happen if she was a cali blonde tanned girl…yall just wanna assume racism só much. Im sorry but it seems like most of this side Thrives from talking about some subjects

King of the Fall

Ursula was one of the worst things about this remake, new version of Poor Unfortunate Souls sucked to high heaven and back. The Lion King Remake got terrible reception also and guess what, it had nothing to do with racism, it just was trash, same as this is trash. Princess and the Frog received great reviews upon release and has since been elevated to classic status in peoples minds. So where is this racism being a big factor in the reception of disney films?

Hey, I'm king of the world, you ought to hear my song, you come on measure me, I'm twenty inches long

It's not the fact that they changed Ariel's appearance. It's that people have a huge problem with it because she's black. Ariel's race never had anything to do with her character. It was her voice that made her unique and that is exactly why Halle was cast as Ariel, because of her voice. While the changes are unnecessary, that still doesn't change the fact that this is The Little Mermaid. It's the same story with an extra added things. People are too focused on their prejudice to even give this movie a chance.

I agree with Emma Watson as Belle, however here is where the problem lies. Pocahontas & Tiana's race DOES have something to do with their storylines. Pocahontas was a real person and Tiana's life... Well, have you seen P&TF? :oprah: Tbh I do hope that they stop with the live actions but your last point is absolutely flawed.

It's a reimagining though, not a direct recreation. They also changed plot elements, added new songs, but the only thing anyone complains about is Ariel's color. That's why it's racism

I challenge any dissenter to tell me why Ariel being black changes who she is, instead of just the way she looks

Literally every live action actress has had different facial features as they are real people…

her hair is red AND loose. They used a mixture of her locs and loose hair. And do you really care about eye color? You just named so many things that don’t matter when it comes down to the character and you still want me to believe her skin color isn’t playing a factor? Okay.

Doesn't change the fact that they changed the appearance of the protagonist too drastically, while other characters are very much alike the og (afaik). It's a bad production if they were so afraid to give her blue eyes and actually RED hair without locs, despite her being brownish instead of very pale like the og. All previous live actions have had pretty accurate character appearances, so I'm not surprised this one didn't do well. People have a childhood memory, don't be so surprised about it. :iamfair:

Ps. Actually Will Smith as Genie was also a horrible choice, only because he isn't as chunky and comic as the og one... :smh:

And people can stay with that childhood memory :ohwell: It doesn’t take away facts, that people were pressed about her skin color. Literally the main thing that changed is her hair and her skin color, so… what exactly is “drastically changed”?

It’s actually doing well, people just love to complain. Is it doing amazing? No, but It’s still doing well. :iamfair:

Her big blue eyes tho..? :excuseu: The thing is, racism is not the only reason why the movie is doing bad. Rings of Power had way bigger backlash only because some new characters were black. It did well, but since people were so pressed about its wokeness, changing an existing main character so drastically was doomed from the beginning. :iamfair:

Why do you keep reducing Ariel down to purely her appearance? None of her looks apart from her being a mermaid were relevant to her story. Halle clearly embodied the spirit of the character which is why she was chosen to play the role. This wasn’t the first nor will it be the last time ariel has been portrayed by a WOC. This IS Disney’s The little mermaid

Ok? So at the end of the day you wanted someone who looked like the animated version? :ladyhaha:

The movie isn’t doing badly, it’s just not “making the numbers” that people expected.
Also, is “wokeness” so bad?
