Riley 1,305
So I came across this tweet: And it got me to thinking... in the day and age of TikTok/YouTube/social media, viral videos, overnight fame & success, etc. artists don't really have to grind as hard as they used to to get noticed/extreme exposure. (Please re-read that, I'm not saying artists don't work hard) Genuinely curious, because obviously artists perform in smaller venues at first but - is this specific to New York ? Or was this just the way to get noticed pre-social media? Cause I got to thinking about it, and of course each artist has their own story and comeup scenario, but like WHO is out there busting their ass in clubs and just a year or two later is a household name bleeding to death at the VMAs? ICONIC Would love to see/hear of examples of other artists performing in clubs cause it's kind of cool to see today's headliners back in their beginnings
Noah 26,635
I think Doja Cat and Dua Lipa performed at Clubs as well. Doja was like around at least 5 years before Say So hit off and Dua toured with her Debut like 2-3 times. ⟡ ⋆ ˚。⋆🦢⋆ ˚。⋆⟡
Space Cowboy 11,670
I don't know if she "had" to do this, she did this well into 2009 when Just Dance and Love Game were already huge.
DontCallMeAlice 1,558
Probably Dua Lipa but it’s not on the same level as Gaga in 2008-2009. I feel like pop music is slowly dying because the newbies don’t have to do what Gaga did to earn their fame. It shows in their performances and it just feels so bland nowadays. Pop music will neve die, but I agree the landscape itself has changed

But it's not really true, there has been amazing pop music in the past by people who didn't perform in small clubs ... Kylie became popular because of a starring role in a soap opera. ImMatt 1,625
Ed Sheeran certainly did his time performing virtually anywhere that would have him for seven years before he made it. Not the club scene, but he's possibly a more recent example of someone that grinded for their success.

Such a good point - and the fact she has openly said she did the club circuit on top of her tour to pay for the budget of the fame ball like... Insane !!! Kylie & Madonna were there way before Gaga, I think we’re talking about the new generation here. They’re absolute queens but I was referring to current A-list artists who don’t need to work as hard as prior A-listers to earn their fame.
Economy 47,517
Well I'd say yes and no... Artists now have other avenues on social media to get get noticed and u can get famous without doing this stuff But definitely there's underground artists that still do this to create a local market and local hype cuz often that's all they got, if any of them manage to break into the scene u will see artists from time to time that became big that were doing this. So I doubt Gaga is going to be the last one. Jessie J for example I believe did this kind of thing too although she did not remain an A-List celebrity for long but if I remember correctly she did come after Gaga There's always underground artists doing this stuff, and from time to time one of them will blow up in popularity. It will (already does) happen way less often but I guarantee u Gaga definitely is not the last one

I mentioned Kylie because her path was totally different, and she didn't do the club scene, she became popular on a TV show... as an example of a-listers who "work hard" on the club scene
