Seattle rejects public drug use legislation

Don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand the piece of legislation needed work but on the other hand, these drug users need to be taken seriously but the city council sounds like it’s just maintaining the status quo. Needles in parks. Needles in grocery store produce areas. People smoking crack on the light rail with babies on board. People using bus stops as places to kick it and smoke god knows what…it’s frustrating because other cities I’ve visited aren’t like this with such brazen drug use. Hopefully they work on better legislation that’ll actually pass instead of doing the usual complaining without doing anything.

It’s such a problem in so many major cities  it sickens me seeing people shooting up and smoking crack in the subway systems.. on top of that, most of these people can behave dangerous and erratic and lots of people get pushed onto the tracks or stabbed.

over all, America needs to address substance abuse and mental health issues and provide more systems to help people who are suffering and change their lives.  I know it’s not easy or cheap, but I think it’s a win win for both parties.

Sometimes if feels like the Seattle city council wants to be Portland. Their attitude on this was basically “SPD can still make drug arrests,” which sounds a lot like horse **** to me. They don’t take this issue seriously at all.

I’m sorry but this is ridiculous and helps no one. After spending some time in PNW all I wanted to do was leave. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful regions in the world but the two main cities (Portland & Seattle) need serious work. I appreciate them attempting to be progressive but sometimes people just need hands on help not more slack.

My province has both of these, as well as decriminalization of drugs. 
Unfortunately, the problem terribly more complex than that.

Yeah, they won't fix the problem by themselves but with widespread use in the city they make the streets safer, cleaner, and curbs overdose deaths, no?

I'm not anywhere near an area that funds them so I can't say from experience but the studies seem promising.

I have lived in Portland for 10+ years and it's gotten so bad here. I see people openly using drugs (fentanyl) out in the open all the time. So many tents, screaming, people in unfortunate circumstances. It's so sad to see what the city has become.

West Coast cities have gone to complete sh*t. I have empathy for homeless addicts, but I'm extremely fearful of them as well. A few weeks ago in SF a guy ran up to me with a broken terracotta pot and screamed he was going to bash my face in. Idk how the state or local governments are supposed to fix this issue but it doesn't even seem like they care to try.
