Why were all the girls “going back to their roots” 2016-2019

Pop music a few years earlier went really over the top overall, to the point of being uninteresting.  

Gaga pushed the needle really far for pop culture to an extreme. Everyone was following suit to be as eccentric as possible. Come 2015, there was no longer a draw in a pop tars image being eccentric. The pendulum was shifting in a different direction.

Gaga and Miley did it to shift lanes and shed their prior images from a few years before. 

I don’t think I would group Witness into the “back to roots” category. If anything, she attempted the opposite, which may be why Witness failed. 

I would also add Beyonces Lemonade, and Justin’s Man of the Woods to this category!

Why do we still think Gaga’s roots are country she’s a f*** New Yorker from her birth, I remember she said she listened to Bruce Springsteen growing up but that girl grew up in the middle of broadway, jazz and Britney Spears
