i'd suggest gladiator battles and family tours of mental asylums were more harmful as forms of entertainment than american idol but sure whoopi, pop off.

I would it was the Real World. In the beginning it was interesting and relatively realistic. That evolved into the reality tv that we have now where people do ANYTHING for attention.

While I wouldn't say it caused it, I'm not sure why people are disagreeing. The early seasons of American Idol caused a trend of people being bullied by the whole world after being seen on TV. This trend continued to shows like X-Factor. Never forget that the holistic vocal coach (I can't remember her name at the moment) ended her life over trauma from the bullying she received.
