Courtesy. It used to be more common for booing to happen at Cannes when it wasn’t enjoyed but the festival has been trying to curb that because it looks bad and people don’t want to get disinvited. The ovations when they’re short are usually more applauding the effort than the success. It’s very much the festival equivalent to a participation trophy.
