The Idol has received a slew of underwhelming reviews after its premiere of its first two episodes at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday.

The HBO series, created by The Weeknd, Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim, has been panned by critics and slammed for its 'graphic' sex scenes and gratuitous nudity.

The show, which stars Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd, was a rare TV project to screen at the annual cinematic event in France, at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

After its Cannes premiere on Monday, which was reportedly met with a five-minute standing ovation, The Idol has been hit by a host of underwhelming reviews as critics slammed its 'graphic' sex scenes, but some did praise Lily's performance.

A review penned by The Hollywood Reporter's Lovia Gyarkye dubbed the forthcoming drama 'more regressive than transgressive' in a disappointing verdict.  The review told how HBO sought to amplify the sex-fuelled debauchery in marketing the series, advertising it from the 'sick and twisted minds' of Euphoria creator Sam and rapper The Weeknd.
The publication also criticised the 'gratuitous' displays of nudity for Lily's character Jocelyn.  In one scene, Jocelyn tells an associate she likes Tedros' 'rapey' vibes, according to the report, adding: 'There's a strenuousness to the sex scenes between Depp and Tesfaye that kills any sense of eroticism.'

Very disappointed with The Weeknd. I won’t be watching it. I’m so sick of oversexualizing everything. At first it was supposed to be a series about struggles of young rising music star directed by female director, but The Weeknd didn’t like “female perspective” :laughga: so he made this **** with sick-minded Sam Levinson. Disgusting rape-apologists… Very disappointed

Apparently in one scene Lily has s*m*n on her face and twitter is calling her a c*m sock.

It just shows how hard the transition from a musician to an actor is and sex doesnt always mean success.

I hope the exit is joyful and i hope never to return.

These reviews aren’t surprising at all. The trailers & previews have all been lame. It’ll be a hit though, I’m sure.

Dang. It sounds like they took what was supposed to be a satire/critique of the dark side of fame and just made it into a toxic male fantasy.

I read someone comment about how they think erotic thrillers can’t be appreciated like they used to be because of modern day values. But that makes little sense because the ones from the 80s/90s still hold up and aren’t that offensive. Maybe Sam Levinson is just not that good at his job? He is great at sensationalism though.

i'll only watch maddy's cameo as it takes place in the same universe as euphoria... then it's goodbye to tesfaye's greasy rat tail for good

The standing ovation for x amounts of minutes in every Cannes film festival showing is so stupid to me. That gets tacked on everything.

4th Time Around

I wont be watching this trainwreck of a show, The Idol reads as something that could have been an interesting critique of fame and Hollywood turned basic try hard shock value from the immagination of Levinson. This show tried to advetise itself as edgy and transgressive, in reality it just sounds like predictable and boring nonsense with awful acting.
