I'm starting to wish the Hot 100 would "retire" songs like TRL back in the day. The contemporary metrics sustain certain songs forever and keep new songs from rising steadily. When streaming is such a huge part of the tally, it keeps the mega-hits afloat because most people are just playing the same stuff over and over again. Radio and sales driven metrics have more organic turnover and/or depend on label promo (i.e. smaller windows of visibility). Streaming is basically a "fan vote," a non-expiring ongoing transaction at no individual cost per use. So, you just get a prolonged status quo.

They really need to do what the UK charts do. Only three songs from an artist can chart at once, and if a song declines in chart point for ~three weeks then the songs chart points are halved. Both of these prevent songs from clogging up the UK chart too much, and the Hot 100 needs to do this too.
