Chromatica could have been a bigger and more complete era but unfortunately we all know what happened with COVID. Chromatica was far from the biggest of all time or biggest of her career. But it spent two weeks at #1 in the UK, also hit the summit in the US, Australia, Canada, France, and Italy just to name a few, and had multiple big mass media moments throughout 2020. I don’t know what you’re trying to push on a Gaga forum, gtfoh Chromatica debuting at number 1, getting another top 5 hit with stupid love and Chromatica II/911 transition going viral on tiktok have NOTHING to do with my point about the song Rain On Me, you seem to think that because I am realistic enough to know the single would not have debuted at number 1 without Ariana Grande that means I am trying to call the Chromatica era a flop. There is also no need for saying gtfoh at the end, calm down and stop acting like a crazy stan who belongs in a nut house. Just because I have an opinion does not mean it is a personal attack against you or Gaga, I am one of the og fans who has been here since her debut and I am unfazed by stan behavior coming after me and trying to be toxic gatekeepers. Have a calm discussion with me or buzz off. My point is that how much could Ariana Grande have really helped?? Rain On Me was a smash of a pop song IMO and I think any female artist would’ve really complimented the song well and helped it be massively successful. It works as a duet really well, you also have to remember when the song came out. The message of dancing and smiling while the clouds cover and bad things rain down on you was extreeeemely timely just 2 full months into a global pandemic. I also think the public was finally excited and primed for a new Gaga pop project. Her fanbase certainly contributed to the numbers in the short and long terms but let’s not pretend some of her other singles just prior to hadn’t done so well. A single by Ariana Grande wasn’t a sure fire number one in 2020 by any means. Especially a house-leaning dance pop track, something she isn’t known for. I just feel like comments like “X absolutely wouldn’t have happened without Y” discredit the appeal that Gaga regenerated for herself with Joanne and ASIB and the work that she and the producers put in to making a flawless pop record. I think that Rain On Me without Ariana Grande would have been a moderate chart success assuming Gaga still chose to drop Stupid Love as the lead single (which failed to chart at number 1 interestingly) despite benefiting from the pre releaese hype of people being excited for a new Gaga pop era. The real problem with Chromatica was that the era was incomplete, nothing was as big as it could have been and some of that was beyond Gaga's control because of COVID. One result of this was that despite the initial excitement and hype you were talking about, the general public quickly lost interest and the singles started slipping down the charts faster than might have happened in an ideal scenario. Some might not want to admit it but the only people still talking about Chromatica at the end of the year or now are Gaga fans, the album did not have a long term impact in as serious a way as her return to pop after so many years should have had, nowhere is this proven more than when the 911 video dropped, it was her best and most creative video since ARTPOP era and yet even 2 years after its release, it has less than 80 million views because by then the momentum of the album was fading fast. She doesn't sell/stream anywhere close to Adele and Taylor or close to her 2010-2012/Shallow level....and that's fine. She's still an A lister and one of the biggest acts around. The Chromatica era is the story of something that did well but not nearly as well as it could have done I feel like folks forget Gaga's always been an album artist. She's kind of the reverse of Rihanna, who always had incredibly sales for her singles compared to her albums in the US. ROM would have easily gone top 10 imo, as SL went top 5, leaked, and was less dancy than ROM. I'm not sure it would have gone number 1 without Rihanna. It's very hard to get a #1 song nowadays unless it goes viral on tik tok or someone has an Adele, Harry, or Taylor type of fanbase.

That is the only point I was trying to make. Honestly, I love Ga but idk if she'll ever top 2010-2012 or Shallow. The industry is super ageist when it comes to women artists, tik tok absolutely favors younger stars or more rap and rock pop oriented tracks, and the public has generally moved away from the type of music Gaga or even Bey (who isn't really pop, but has pop influences for sure) makes. Also, the industry (particularly streaming services) oddly does not push the big artists as much as one would expect. The majority of the hits on the chart are usually not big artists anymore...it's what's being features on streaming services or what went viral. Obviously there are still hits (like Break My Soul, ROM, Ari's song with The Weeknd), but you don't see Kendrick dominating anymore (which one would expect), etc. But even things like Break My Soul, Ari's with The Weeknd, ROM, etc., are not as big of hits those artists had 5-7 yrs ago. Gaga's basically going to have to go viral (have the song become popular on tiktok, etc.) if she's ever going to have Shallow 2.0. again.

I largely agree with this except when it comes to the Weeknd and Ariana Grande. The only reason that they did a remix of Die For You was because the original was going viral and despite everything being last minute, it still went to number 1 on the charts, I think that is a testement to how relevant both of them are. I am predicting a big success for The Weeknds next studio album which he is currently working on and will drop sometime after Idol is released, because not only has some of the hype from After Hours finally worn off but there are rumors that the completion of this trilogy will mark the end of his current persona. As for Ariana, her base is starving for new music and I could easily see her getting another major hit. I don't see Gaga ever equaling the commercial success of Shallow again but I would love to be proven wrong.
