It was a genuine question. If it was personal, wouldn't people connect to it and feel more compelled to listen through though?

This album is an incredibly heavy listen. It’s entirely about his grief after finding out his best friend died right after his wife was diagnosed with cancer. He’s said that all his albums are personal but this is the most “uncomfortable” because of how brutal the subject matter is. Plus it doesn’t have a big pop moment like Bad Habits or Shape of You, it’s all entirely a diary entry of his darkest thoughts. So yes people have connected and related, and that’s part of why the reviews are extraordinary from fans and critics. But it’s not aimed at chart success, it’s just something Ed felt the need to release because it was authentic to what he was feeling. So even if people connect and listen, it might not be on repeat for people the same as previous albums because of how heavy it is.

The lawsuit publicity worked. I guess since this album is more personal, it's a good thing that it has these numbers, there's a chance it could've been lower all things considered.

It's still an underperformance. Curtain is #1 in TTH. He has multiple songs in New Music Friday. The songs might've been too personal to connect.

This is a more intimate release, which makes sense it’d have these numbers. Divide was carried by Shape of You and Equals by Bad Hits which were obviously bigger hits than whatever songs he released to promote Substract.

Gaga and Ed are my two most listened to artists.  I love the album and connect to how heavy it is.  For me, it’s as if Chromatica wasn’t an upbeat pop record.

 

I think Curtains will be the next single and has potential to be the “Shivers” of this album.

Glad to know I’m not the only one who loves them both haha. Two of my all time favorites. Curtains is honestly an album highlight, I would love to see it be a single.

So the excuses about the album being personal but he still maneged to get that #1 on HTT? lmao and lemme think what you are saying: the streams are low (extremely low for him, it's a flop let's call it for what it is) and suddenly he doesn't have a fanbase anymore? I mean, you release a personal album and your fans rejected you?

The point IS, he's been underperforming for months. He's not interesting anymore like he was before and people finally understood that he's been singing the same song over and over again.
