Accepting his invitation and going was already offensive. First Rick Caruso, now this. Makes me think that what she's looking for in these clips is a moral compass

She’s definitely a republican who has a hard time faking being liberal for her fans/the media :ororomunroe:

You're free to dislike the idea of monarchy and I totally get why (I'm in the middle, neither in support of nor against) but to act like it's something that reflects negatively on the people of that country is another matter. At the end of the day, they are part of our culture, like them or not. They are a major pull for tourism resulting in hundreds of millions to our economy annually. The Commonwealth Games is a major pull of tourism for whichever nation hosts it and provides a great way for smaller nations to win a sporting medal for their country and the games would no longer exist if the UK monarchy ended. The royal warrant on our biggest UK products is a major deal to get and basically confirms your company will stick around forever and all these warrants would be removed in the event of a republic. The biggest issues of all is that our flag, monetary system and even the name of our country would have to change if we became a republic. While many of our people don't think the monarchy defines our culture, it objectively does, it's imbued into our culture everywhere and when I mention how so much of our country would change and our economy would be worse off if we lost them, they tend to suddenly waver a bit, not realising how much of an effect it would have. As far as I'm concerned, the monarchy makes us different to a lot of the world and makes us unique. They're not saints, but who is? A country will still have its issues regardless of whether it has a monarch or a president, as the USA knows only too well.

I think losing a major part of anyone's tradition and culture is a real shame and I don't think anyone's tradition and culture should be mocked. And plenty of other countries still have monarchies. There are currently 23 countries with monarchies (and the UK represents not only itself but 14 other nations as well), meaning 43 nations overall are represented by a monarchy, across 5 continents. Yet, we act as if the UK is the only country that still does this and that we're somehow backwards for doing so.

This is the definition of a logical fallacy. Those are two separate issues, completely unrelated. You do realize it's possible to recognize the problem with shootings in America and simultaneously think it's ludicrous that colonizer monarchies still exist in the 21st century, right? Do you understand the concept of walking and chewing gum at the same time.

I personally find it offensive that you seem to be suggesting that being critical of the monarchy somehow means you don't care about school shootings. Have a more salient argument next time, thanks bye.

I guess I was demonstrating that it's not really a big deal compared to other issues in the world and other countries when the original user was pointing out that this is a "problem" of the UK. Who cares about them, they don't do anything, they have no power over our politics, they bring money to the country etc, they're just for show. Furthermore any country in the commonwealth that wants to leave is welcome to, it's purely voluntary, this isn't a case of I own your country bow to me anymore.

There are millions of people in the UK who do not want their tax dollars funding the lavish and unnecessary lives of the royals. No one ever said it's the most important issue in the world, but it certainly is worth discussing, and it's an easy solution: abolish the monarchy and then move on. I disagree that because it's voluntary it's not a problem. It still requires a majority to make the decision, thereby negating the will of the minority. And in a case like this, it just shouldn't be allowed to exist. There is no reason for it, it's a waste of money, and it's antiquated.

We spend way less on them than they make for our economy. Also you clearly dont live in the UK or you would know full well that if we didn't pay for the royals with our tax it wouldn't be spent on anything better, our crappy government can't even use our tax to fill potholes in our roads, we would pay the same amount of tax and see no benefit :alsemanche: We will just have to agree to disagree.
