I don’t like it either lmao. It feels very disingenuous, cash grab-y, and exploitative of the community she was trying to uplift. The music isn’t bad there’s just NO heart or passion in it

The "RENAISSANCE has weak lyrics" is so tired of an argument. The album references goes really deep on house and ballroom music, and a lot of those songs had repetitive and even "simpler, in your face" lyrics, it's music to get in almost a trance by the repetition of a mantra while loud electronic beats play, think of you on a club really drunk and tired from the hardships of life while dancing and listening to someone repeat "You won't break my soul" fifty times, you don't need intricate poetry to feel this sentiment, actually, those kind of lyrics could even work against the song.

You can compare all of Beyoncé's work and see how the lyricism of RENAISSANCE is wildly different from them, it's not that Bey (and her various writers) are / got lazy, everything is serving the purpose of the album

But you can still do it well and have fun, which Bey did not.

Some of the theories  i've read here as to why she doesn't "get" the album and chucking it up to album being too "complex" or her not "knowing the history" are ridiculous to me. She does not like it cuz she does not like it. period , get over it and grow up.  So far as she was not being dismissive, i do not see the problem.

This !!

lmao I even read a comment on this page mentioning “homophobia” 😂😂😂

ppl are waaaaaaaaaay too sensitive and should be aware that ppl can have different opinions without coming from a place of hate

Beyonce does them subtly on this album apart from SR, and does them as a nod to the culture and understands the culture. It's not just done like David guetta with Blue where they just want a hit.

She doesn’t do it subtly. At the core of every song there is a sample.

And how does she understand a culture that she hasn’t been a part of at least until she was a grown woman? And even if she does, why does she get to celebrate it as a ‘straight’ woman, when Ballroom culture stems from the Black QUEER community? A community that was created as an escape. -> in my eyes that is cultural appropriation as well.

Ajay's taste is pretty vanilla im not surprised

Exactly, I like her and her reactions are funny but she rarely likes something that's experimental or alternative.

yeah bey has been an ally - but just a passive one, shes never been as passionate about her activism like gaga, whos been living and breathing her LGBT activism since she debuted.

kinda off topic but not really, i truly miss her reactions like these ones, where she was emotional about the music and genuinely excited

i do feel bad that she feels jaded now and hasnt had this kinda reaction in a longgggg time.

I think she just had different expectations for a Beyonce album. I bet if she heard BMS first, she wouldn't have been as gobsmacked as she was reacting to the rest of the songs lol.

I knew she would like POTS because Bey sang down, but what I didn't expect was her not liking VG when her vocals there are also amazing

what was complex about it, most of the lyrics were about partying and having sex, none of the lyrics were all that deep at all

Complex =\= intricate metaphors. The records on Renaissance are complex in the sense that they often defy conventional pop songwriting, the production is very detailed + layered, the songs are rhythmically intricate, and the composition of the songs pulls from and successfully weaves together a myriad of subgenres pretty seamlessly. I get not feeling it, but I think it's pretty clearly structurally complex.

True! I think Ajayii is smart but I think the music was so out of what she would listen to that from the jump she was not about to dig deep and consider the album’s context and intention (which are vital to its success imo). Which the video shouldn’t do anyway! It’s a first listen! I think Renaissance is an album you appreciate as you consider it but it’s easy on first listen to be a little like wait this is a Beyoncé album???? Bc it actually is very different for her! I think that was ajayii’s biggest problem. She has a clear idea of what she expects from Beyoncé and this ain’t that

The "wait...this is a Beyoncé album?" feel is exactly what made me love on my first listen.
