Ajay hating on Beyonce's Renaissance album. "her least fave beyonce album so far"

As much as I love this album DOWN, I hope she doesn't get too much hate thrown her way for her opinion. I'd hope for *no* hate, but that would be wasted energy since fan culture is awful.

Not gonna tread into the album complexity debate going on, but I will say the only people I've talked to with the same opinions as her have come from the very hetero-coded girlies, so her video makes a lot of sense to me lol

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

Acting like Renaissance is not a complex album just goes to shows how much y'all love to hate on Beyonce :ladyhaha: Yeah the lyrics aren't literary masterpieces but since when is that the norm in mainstream music anyway? And when has that been the only indicator of quality? The production, the melodies, the INSANE use of samples, etc. are genius and not something that could have been done by just anyone. You can dislike an album and still appreciate the craft behind it.

OP: I'm watching rn and I don't see her hating on anything tbh, she's just not vibing with it which is not entirely surprising. I always thought that she'll either absolutely love Renaissance or not care for it that much, but hating sounds like she trashed it (which she hasn't so far).

Please, Putting samples together is not some big flex. yes, the melodies are commendable but there's nothing new or complex about the instrumental production. I feel like yall are mistaking the words  "experimental" and "complex"

Finally, about the lyrics, When a large majority of the songs on your album all have extremely repeatative or empty choruses , poeple can't help but call out the obvious lack off lyricism. Any other artist would get the same crtique so why should beyonce be held to a different standard.?

"putting samples together" is absolutely not what renaissance is about and if you can't see that then it's on you. It's very hard to "put samples together" in such a masterful way without it sounding like a cheap recreation of the original tracks or just a collage of them. Literally just look at so many songs that have heavy samples today and how cheap and stupid they sound (e.g. Kim Petras latest single which is laughable to say the least). Picking specific references, cutting them and editing them together, the layers of samples and new production, etc. is top notch on Renaissance and not something that can be easily recreated anyone. Not everything has to be groundbreaking and new for it to be good, and Renaissance is a prime example of that. It didn't come up with something totally unheard of, but it does what it does exceptionally well. I know the difference between experimental and complex and I think Renaissance is both at the same time.

I'm not saying Bey is beyond criticism. But saying an album is mediocre or bad or lacks complexity or whatever SOLELY based on the lyrics and ignoring other great aspects of it is not the tea.

The tea is, Many artists that you failed to mention have put samples together in a beautiful way and "complex" is not a word that is often used to describe those works because in reality, theres nothing overly complex about it, people have done remixes with way more detail than anything on renaissance so please let's not pretend that sampling music is something so off the cuff or some revered skill.

btw, i never said that reinnesance was about just putting samples together, neither did i say the album was mediocre solely for its lyricism or lack thereof. Stop creating points all by yourself and arguing them all by yourself .

Also, this rhetoric of  "if you dont get xyz then its on you" is so tired because if you really felt that way, you won't be on this site debating your taste.

Finally, if we want to pretend and act like weak lyricism is not a valid critism for music in today's world then by all means :yennefer:

We need to learn to accept valid critism and move on  instead of always trying to dismiss people genuine feelings as being hateful

I hated it upon first listen too honestly. It grew on me with every listen, and it’s now probably my favorite album by Bey.

beyonce is extremely talented at dancing and singing

shes released some great songs and albums but if some people just dont vibe with it, thats totally fine lol

i feel like renaissance for bey is what chromatica is for gaga, not for the GP to praise but for their stans to consume and love, and thats totally fine.

i prefer the bey who sang love on top, halo, crazy in love, listen - i like when she shows insane vocals, this seemed like she was more focused on the production of the album - like ajay said, there wasnt really that great of vocals compared to her previous work.

While RENAISSANCE act i is one of my favorites so far, I agree 100%.

Needless to say, the album's sounds and mixes borrow heavily from the ones they use in ballroom... only she gives a high budget, more polished production to them, with a huge team behind her. They did an excellent job for sure but let's not act like she's a revolutionary mastermind of mixes and samples just because some here recognize a few sounds here and there from a few shows and little clips they've seen which showcased ballroom in some way.

Many knowledgeable people of the scene love the album, yet appreciate it for what it is without glorifying it way more than it's supposed to. It's clearly an homage than anything and these people are happy celebrating that. This album is not for everyone and that's okay. This whole argument is not that deep and people need to breathe.
