I thought that was something we already knew, oh well good thing there's people doing research and not just propaganda.

I'm probably wrong

i had a friend who was addicted to weed, he ended up going crazy and got physical where he ended up stabbing his dad (thank god his dad survived) but it all went bad after one of our 4/20 parties. after that ive never smoked weed regularly, if i do smoke its once every few months. i truly do believe this is true because my friend did not have manic episodes before he started abusing marijuana.

I wonder how many of these individuals had this already and the substance just helped it manifest.

that’s the thing. i can’t remember the other substance, but there’s a hypothesis for some other illicit drug (might be lsd? not sure) that already predisposed individuals will develop symptoms…not necessarily that the drug causes it from nothing but brings it out from predisposition

I guess I could see this for the developing brain; however, it is not a fatal drug at least - and compared to the opioid crisis or alcohol, I’ll take people smoking weed as harm reduction. And most stoners are pleasant folks.

My own story with weed is that I was very averse to it for many years - then started smoking around 23. (Am 32 now) Found it really helpful for sleeping, creativity, reflecting, food, sex, and of course enhancing films and music. It sometimes increases anxiety but for me that’s attributable to the legality of it and some of the continued stigma. Sometimes it takes me to a dark place (reflecting on death and loss or how tiny we are in the universe), but it serves as an inward journey for me. And, I get it, everyone is differently affected by it.

Lastly, I have a hunch it’s still not legal in the US because people have the stigma that it makes you a lazy couch potato — the opposite of what the capitalist and rugged individualist society wants us to be. Get back to work peasant! Lol

I respect the academic research and also can’t help but wonder who funded it. Academia is not immune from special interest groups and funding.

This isn't really new tho. There have been links made in the past in many other studies between cannabis use and the increased risk of developing schizophrenia.

The risk particularly increases if the use starts before the age of 16

Human bias is in almost everything but these links have been made for time now it's not the first time such conclusions have been reached

I know ppl like to defend weed because at least it's not a hard drug so no big deal (maybe the no big deal also has a human bias in reverse) ... And perhaps for some ppl may even be beneficial (I think I'd maybe consider it if I had some major chronic pain due to a condition for example say I had fibromyalgia or terminal cancer and it might help me cope)

But that doesn't mean is totally harmless either. It's still a pretty potent substance and like any potent substance (regardless if it's legal, illegal, pharmaceutical or natural) has a tendency to have risks and potential side effects especially if it's used frequently and/or a prolonged period of time

Like most substances (or heck even junk food), if u consume it only occasionally and in a controlled manner, the vast majority of the time nothing bad will happen to ur health (tho I personally still wouldn't but I'm just very cautious)

Well that's true for the vast majority of things tho... The bad health effects of something are almost always multifactorial.

Even a bad diet or lack of exercise... There's a reason some ppl develop diabetes but not high blood pressure or why some ppl develop heart disease and others it's cancer but not heart desiese or why some ppl smoke till they are 100 and get no lung cancer while others might get it just from city pollution alone...

Our bodies genetics all have strengths and weaknesses and stuff were more prone to. Most of the times we are not already born with an illness unless it's an outright genetic defect... illnesses usually get triggered or develop at some point in our lives by environmental factors that activate it

What ur saying isn't exactly ground breaking or special... Only some hardcore substances or super toxic things will almost always develop the same same desieses for everyone...

The vast majority of unhealthy habits tho merely trigger things ur predisposed to while they will not in ppl who are not predisposed to those same illnesses.

U can say that about many things so I don't think the fact that weed might not cause some health issues by itself makes it any less legitimate to talk about its risks any less than sugar or high carb diet is to diabetes. The fact that a genetic component works with the high carbs to cause diabetes doesn't negate it's health risk that exists there imo

100% this. I struggle with addiction big time and at the very least, by cutting out weed I’ve felt a lot mentally healthier

I’m so happy to hear this for you!!!!! It really is life changing.  Not easy, but it does make a huge difference. Imo

Agreed, but the statistics in the article, as well as the verbiage, downplay genetic factors and can make it seem like schizophrenia is caused by cannabis use disorder. Causation and correlation are VERY different, and while it's hard to prove causation, equivilating the two is dangerous. Cannabis use disorder is also very very loosely defined. It's as simple as "I threw up once but I still use it", when a disorder should be more tightly defined, especially when conducting studies such as this. These researchers should have asked more questions regarding the negative outcomes used for cannabis use disorder as a control. But instead avoided this (or at least it wasn't reported on) in order to skew data. Imo this study can lay a good foundation for future research, but is weak independently. Reporting on the increased economic burden of schizo can also be misleading because there's no data added for how often people are seeking treatment now vs 2013, making it seem like an increase in cannabis use disorder is causing a increase in schizophrenia, rather than a increase in general mental health diagnosis.

It's definitely a drug that should be used from time to time (if it's going to be used) not all day every day. I've seen people's brain turn into complete mush from weed addiction, and years later after stopping they can still not be back to normal. That being said I still think more research needs to be done before any conclusions are drawn

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
