I'm a television writer. It blows. But is necessary. I guess. We'll still get screwed. It's all performative really. The whole thing is depressing.

Nothing. Not allowed to write. And I respect my union and the rules.

I might work on a novel. But you'll be seeing me here a lot more frequently!

What happened after the 2007 strike? Did conditions get any better or has it stayed the same since before then?

That strike was way before my time. But most of my older friends say it was the worst decision ever. Producers started making reality shows left and right. It really changed what audiences wanted to watch.

The thing about writers is that even though we literally write what you watch? We have no power. Actors and directors have all the power. So our strike doesn't bother the producers. They have enough shows already in the pipeline OR they will just give us another Real Housewives.

It's complicated and frustrating and sad. Too hard to explain all the ins and outs here.

I'm going to be okay but I feel so bad for younger writers or writers who were just on the cusp of something that might very well be lost. It's SUCH a tough business to be involved with on its best days. Really hard to break in and stay in. This could just make everything so much worse.

My hope is that it only lasts a week or so. But that's probably not what's going to happen.

Are you allowed to teach or work in some other capacity outside of writing?

River

I hope they will hire new ones on the way, in the recent years the quality of the movies/tv shows really has declined, like the dialogue is written to go viral but ends up cringe, storylines are using the same old twists, I mean twin sibling again? pregnancy? "I did it to protect you"? everything feels so uninspired.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Oh for sure. But writing is such a transitory job as it stands anyway. I'm used to not working for months at a time, then working like a fiend for months. I'll just take this time off and regroup. Again, I hope it's quick and over in a week or two. Though I am not hopeful.

oh wowwww and 2007 seems around when reality TV started gaining traction, few years later there's Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant being some of the top shows, Real Housewives coming around, etc etc! I'm gagged. Hope you can thrive in your field with better circumstances, although I see you're not very hopeful. I wish the best for you!!! Write me into your script <3 lmao
