I accept that 100%. artists will be pressured by society and record labels to give a general positive message = That can be true or false. Nothing we know for sure. I prefer to talk about actions and things that are there. I don't like talking about potential facts. But im not talking about Gagas potential, im talking about how I already see her art. What I did agree with you on is she does give a general positive twist (like ending an album with a positive song), but its not her general approach in my opinion. djBuffoon 12,104
I think she's correct. In my estimation, an artist exists to offer their truth, their perspective. whether it's through creating from the ground up (songwriting, painting, writing, etc) or interpreting the works of others (vocalist, acting, etc.). Some choose to process their truth through a more positive, uplifting, or even fantastical lens. Others are more raw and unfettered. Some, like Gaga, are an interesting balance of all the above. There's no right or wrong, so long as there is truth and honesty behind what they put out into the world.

XxBones 1,177
I think every artist has the right to express themselves how they want but it doesn’t necessarily mean it will resonate with a lot of people. People listen to music to escape and especially coming out of a pandemic when lots of people were effective negatively, sad music isn’t something that feels like an enjoyable way to escape. I know Gaga makes sad music but she was popularized by “just dance” and “born this way”. So I really think from an artist point of view when you express yourself genuinely you also risk people not caring about it.

But thats not how I see or relate to her overall work. It's nice too 'cause a lot of Gaga's happier songs are just silver linings on dark clouds. Do What U Want is a pretty depressing song about the media and how she feels she's lost autonomy and ownership of her own image but Applause, the flip side of that, is how she also loves being in the public eye and loves performing and sharing her art with the fans and world. The Mary Jane Holland and Dope combo are about how touring ruined her body and mind and she became dependent on weed as a painkiller to the point it warped her mind and made her act like someone else - hurting those she cared about. Gypsy is the flip side to them. She loves to travel, meet and perform for fans all around the world. And even if it hurts sometimes, it's her passion and she's happy to do it. So, contextually, I think Gaga's music is best described as "optimistically depressing" ARTPOP is actually a great album to provide examples of this tbh. Swine (sexual assault)/Venus (sexual positivity) G.U.Y. (submissive powerful)/MANiCURE (seeking men, fitting herself to what they're looking for) Donatella (satirical take on toxic fame and fortune)/Fashion! (confident take on glamor and positive attention) ...I wanna write an essay so lemme stop 💅Too cute to be this overworked and underf*cked💅
Werewoof 2,467
So proud of her. i agree in my humble view. Art serves the artist first and foremost. Those who love it and understand then benefit from it as well

I don’t think they are boring because I resonate with them. Eat the Acid makes me emotional and takes me on a trip. It just doesn’t work for you, which is fine! But I don’t think it means that they are bad choices/songs. Plus, I really don’t think K is looking for chart placement as much anymore. I feel as though these songs are more meant to be statement pieces for those who are willing to hear what she has to say.

Lorde said it really great too. “If you’re looking for a savior, well that’s not me. You need someone to take your pain for you? Well that’s not me.” we gotta fr stop. Even most of these artists don’t want it but are afraid to say anything by alienating their fans

But in all reality, I’d rather any of my favorite artists release music they are passionate about and flop into a million pieces, rather than music tailored for the charts only to risk flopping anyways. Because with the former option the artist leaves behind a legacy of solid work. I know Gag Order isn’t going to be for everyone, but I really do think it will be one of her best albums in terms of the artistry she is aiming for. Just my unasked for two cents.
