I still don't see how anyone's mad about this casting choice. She's beautiful and a great singer so what's the problem :saladga:

I’m not usually fussed about Disney anything but I really want to see this movie! She’s so perfect as Ariel and I’ve only seen the trailer.

I first read it as Haille Beiber and I almost didn't click. :huntyga:
All the love for Halle Bailey, the mermaid princess!

I fully understand what the problem is. Or at least I think I understand this. Halle It's not the problem. Nor the color of his skin. The problem is with Disney putting political messages in their movies. At least that's what I feel. Besides, doing it in such an obvious way. I think the idea was good. But do it with a new character, with a super engaging new story. Don't change such an iconic character embedded in our popular culture.

That's all. Halle's voice is beautiful. And I think, if there wasn't such a wonderful and iconic previous movie like The Little Mermaid, the 2023 version would be very well received. And it would be a blockbuster.

I agree with you but I don’t think this is a case of that, 90% of “representation” in modern media feels forced and painfully obvious, I didn’t get that sense from this particular casting

But see, that's the crux of the problem.

Diversity existing is not a political statement.

They're likely changing nothing about Ariel's character that matters, she's still her iconic self and black actresses do not only exist in films that want to "push a woke agenda" or whatever the Repukes would say.

And beyond that, anyone who gets that mad about a live action adaptation of a Disney movie sincerely needs to touch grass :deadbanana:

Like I said, that's how I feel about this movie. And I, and many other people, do not see this Ariel as the Ariel of the cartoon. And I think, I have every right to believe and feel this way about this film. As you have the right to believe in what you believe.

Regardless of our opinions, the box office will speak and say whether or not today's world is ready for this type of controversial changes of iconic characters. And if so. I think it would be a good thing. Apart from us, the fans.

This type of change shouldn't be controversial :toofunny:

I'm sorry, no offense, but your take is a bad one and feels lowkey racist. The amount of melanin in an actress' skin shouldn't be something you focus on like this.

Not continuing this debate 'cause I'm gonna get pissed :huntyga:

I'm surrounded by conservative f*ck heads that spent months complaining about a black girl playing Ariel and it's 'cause they're racist douche bags.

Why is my opinion racist? Does the fact that I want to protect and not change something iconic like The Little Mermaid movie, which touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, make me a racist?

I think you are not understanding my idea.

I emphasize again: the box office will speak and say if this world is ready or not for this type of change. And if it fails, it won't be because most people are racist, but because they are protective of their childhood dreams.

In any case, I don't think it will be a fiasco at the box office. So we have to accept these types of changes in the future. For me it will be very difficult. I only hope that the quality of the product convinces me and makes me understand that what I believe is wrong.
