What happened was I became a stan and I have MTN as my #1 Gaga song of all time so I cursed it! All of my favorite Gaga songs are cursed, MTN, G.U.Y, John Wayne...

Maybe I should stop stanning her :billie:

The album sold incredibly well so singles that come after that have to entice people who previously haven’t bought the album to buy the song/album.  You and I offered something completely different for Gaga so took off well despite the album being out but Mary The Night is a very “Gaga song” so it didn’t pull in many new people to buy the song.

Been said earlier in the thread but she was massively over exposed by that point and the backlash was already happening. The video is lovely ... but esoteric ...

Also I have always felt that the breakdown towards the end of the song is completely unnecessary, clashes with the rest of the asthetic and adds very little to the song.

Bad Kids

its my most favourite song

And when you say my name, like white horses on the waves, I think it feels the same, as an ocean in my veins.

this was back before streaming was mainstream and i always felt that by the time MTN came out as a single, only the hardcore fans were the ones buying it again

i don't see much reason to buy the same song again when you already own the album, especially when it's been out for so long

This is it exactly. Whatever forces contributed to this, it ultimately comes down to the fact that the gp didn’t care and by single 5 they have to for a single to be a success since fans with already have it

It was meant to be a "flop" at the time if I remember. She needed the break.

1. Judas killed a lot of the momentum for the era and her overall career, none of the following BTW singles (or any of her singles since) were able to hit the summit of pop radio in the US

2. Christmas freeze, Marry The Night was sent to radio like a week before Thanksgiving. Radios were playing Christmas music and were about to start playing a whole lot more, and MTN wasn’t strong enough to still get enough spins to enter the top 10 on any radio platform

3. It was her fifth single in 9 months

I don’t remember this at all, it was actually quite evident she wanted it to succeed and for people to hear it because she performed it a crazy amount in a two month span in Nov/Dec 2011. It had a big budget MV and was released to radios WW

It was released too late in the era. If it had been the lead single or even second or third single it probably would have been a smash. The video was also very long and not very GP friendly, and the backlash against Gaga in the media had been steadily growing throughout the Born This Way era.

I wish Gaga would bring back Marry The Night to her live shows though. Even if it wasn't a huge hit at the time, it's still a fan favourite and I would love to see her perform it live again.

Aside from born this way every single from that album had a messy aspect to its release for me

judas releasing at Easter causing drama,

teog being rush released in order to cover up for the Judas backlash

you and I being released felt so stale since it had already been a song she was performing at the monster ball tour like 1.5 years prior

marry the night put out after all the album/era steam was dying and Gaga herself/her sound had reached the “overexposed” saturation point where people were ready for other more subdued sounds/vibes like Adele

I remember they release it as a promo single but was so well received they made it a single?

That’s true but it was obviously partially changed to an official released because Judas was “flopping”. It was pushed less than a month after Judas was released — which at the time made Judas an unprecedentedly short “single” era for Gaga

I love this song but it's too long and complex for radio and the video didn't help either (for the gp I mean, I think the video is a masterpiece).

Sugar Baby

It was released way too late and by the time it did she was so overexposed and the video was way too long for the GP

I never used to love the song and thought it was too aggressive, but i’ve grown to like it loads more, maybe that’s how the gp felt about it at the time, it sounded amazing live though
