They may submit her for support actress so she won't have to compete with Cynthia Erivo

I dont think they’d be able to justify that unless they’re really changing stuff for the movie. Both roles were nominated in lead actress at the the Tony Awards originally too.

It's just a common practice, they are spreading the main actors across the categories so they will have more chances to win and won't compete 2 actors against each other.

For example Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the mains in EEAAO but they submitted her for supporting actress because Michelle Yeoh is actually in the lead of the movie, she's the face of it.

So Basically Ariana is what Jamie Lee Curtis is for Wicked, while Cynthia Erivo is what Michelle Yeoh is for Wicked.

I'm sorry but no. The role of Glinda is much bigger than the role of Jamie Lee Curtis in EEAAO. Elphaba and Glinda are equally leading roles like Ally and Jack in A Star Is Born. Just two females this time instead of the classic male and female lead.

Michelle Yeoh her role in Wicked is supporting. Cynthia and Ari are both leading.

It doesn’t matter, they most likely will push Cynthia for best actress, as much as we all want ariana to be nominated in the best actress category, and ariana to supporting so they will give both actresses the chance to campaign without competing against each other and to give the movie more nominations.
it’s just a common thing to do, it may look illogical but the race it too tight to have 2 actresses from the same movie in one category.

Doubt. She might be nommed but might not win (again), she did something bad that Black Americans haven't forgive and forget for. And which was why Harriet movie didn't perform too well in the USA, cos it was boycotted by many Black Americans.

And that also might or might not be the reason for this Wicked movie will not getting as much gross as it should later.

Other reason is, the conservative will likely quickly against it the minute they learn that the play contains  political allegory and will boycott the movie that it might do the same.

This movie might be another of those divisive movie, which the bad news might drowns all the excitement and hype of this movie.

I'm not a fan of most of Ariana's pop songs (she has a great voice, but it's just not my type of music), but she really ate here! You can hear her Broadway training coming out. She's going to be amazing in this!

the only person I’d want Gaga to lose best actress to is Ariana Grande. I can’t wait to see them there together. Oscars 2025 already did THAT

It's mostly a speculation of how things worked in the last couple of years, I don't really know what happened with Cynthia in the past.

The last movie to have a double nomination in best actress was Thelma & Louise in 1991 and both lost

Wicked doesn't strike me as the type of movie to get a best actress nom but rather other categories like costume design, music etc.

If I'm wrong it would be very exciting tho! I'm dying to see Ariana's acting and the general feeling of the movie. Perched for the trailer.

EEAAO isn’t a good example for this because just from a script standpoint, it’s clear Jamie’s character is supporting. It’s been less common as of late to manipulate the acting nominations to ensure a spot or even a win. Weinstein and others were notorious for this. A recent example would be Alicia Vikander for Danish Girl. The opposite sorta happened this year with Michelle Williams. People assumed she would be supporting just for the nature of the role, but she was in too many scenes and had too many monologues to justify that.

I know Wicked will be split in two parts so they may change aspects, but I just don’t see them reducing the role so it appears supporting. Their relationship is integral to the plot.

There is a certain precedent that hasn’t been talked about where I could see her in supporting though. Historically, it’s been a popular category to nominate “non actors” in. Not saying she isn’t one, just that she is popular for being a singer now. Frank Sinatra, Cher etc all got their first noms this way. That’s why a few years ago it was very plausible JLo could have been nominated.
