In my case, I knew I had to transition because I had severe dysphoria with certain parts of my body to the point were I was depressed for years and wanted to kill myself. I’m not saying that people have to experience gender dysphoria as bad as I experienced it to be trans but I feel like they at the very least have to feel some discomfort in their body. Now if someone wants to transition but doesn’t feel gender dysphoria and is old enough to understand the consequences of transitioning, who am I to judge. I feel you nailed it there. I think gender dysphoria perfectly describes a horrible situation; not feeling at home in your body. Without dysphoria, you would not have gone through this whole process. It would be even a bit undermining to say you just casually prefered to have another body. Gender dysphoria is a real mental health issue. I also understand that 'disorder' sounds very insulting here though. But in the end it is just language. Whether you are biologically in the wrong body or whether you are mentally in the wrong body; you deserve to live the way you feel most comfortable. I am happy you have found the right body that fits how you feel.

While very similar, gender dysphoria derives from being uncomfortable with properties of your body that may have a connection with your biological sex. But the support in this reply makes my heart warm.
Emvee 8,858
Did I watch the same video as the rest of you? What I’m understanding is that she’s giving JK Rowling a pass because she’s a woman? So JK Rowling, a millionaire with no obligation to any political or religious institution, doesn’t need to be held accountable because she’s just a pawn of the patriarchy? Contra is removing Rowling’s agency as a far right activist because she’s a woman, which in itself is misogynistic. Basically insinuating that women can’t think for themselves and only take cues from men. Ridiculous Blocking JK Rowling doesn’t erase the damage she inflicts on trans people as a highly influential public figure.

Being trans in itself is not a mental illness of course, I think everybody here agrees with that, but it definitely can have an impact on your mental health especially before transitioning. And as you said it very well, I would not have transitioned if I didn't feel gender dysphoria at all ! R.

Ridiculous Blocking JK Rowling doesn’t erase the damage she inflicts on trans people as a highly influential public figure. What I took from it is that our energy will be wasted on actively fighting Rowling, as she has become too engrossed in the loop of her own narrative. Additionally, Rowling might have a lot of influence in entertainment but isn't a large political contributor, relatively speaking. Rowling should still be condemned, but efforts in activism might be more effectively spent in places where actual tangible progress can be made. And that would be in (political) institutions where patriarchal power structures sadly still run the show. In that sense, the trans community and Rowling share a common overarching enemy: a political system where powerful cis men largely have no regard for the safety of others - including trans AND cis women. A lot of Rowlings rhetoric is based in feelings of being unsafe and unheard as a demographic - which all lead back to the same 'oppressor'. I don't say that to victimize her, but to further emphasise how she is not the "final boss", as ContraPoints stated. Again: Rowling deserves to be condemned for the damage that she causes as an influential, powerful figure. But we shouldn't forget that there are also bigger fish to fry. Horny Chicken 11,122
I feel euphoric as a boy. It’s something I noticed recently. I count myself lucky not having experienced dysphoria like my trans brother.

You said that gender dysphoria is made up by doctors, that is literally invalidating the experiences with dysphoria that the majority of trans people have lmao. Also calling @Hurem transphobic is ridiculous just bc their understanding is different than yours. “Hands on your knees, I’m Angelina Jolie”

But who is really saying that JK Rowling is the final boss in all of this? Or that she’s the only one that needs to be focused on? I’m pretty sure most people are well aware that white cisgender republicans are the ones actually writing the dangerous legislation. People have literally protested outside of Mitch McConnell’s home. Both fish can be fried. And I would argue that BOTH need to be addressed, because the far right is not just waging political warfare. They are waging cultural warfare as well and people like JK Rowling or Elon Musk and Jordan Peterson are at the forefront of normalizing reactionary world views. JK Rowling is not a victim and she is not an ally in any capacity. Saying we all live under patriarchal rule is like saying the sky is blue. It does not hold as much of a profound significance as Contra is trying to convey.

It does not hold as much of a profound significance as Contra is trying to convey. I see your point, and I think Contra herself emphasizes in the video that Rowling deserves backlash and repercussions for the harmful rhetoric she sends into the world (directly to her millions of followers). That's what the majority of the video was about, establishing that she is NOT a victim of a so-called witch trial and that the public reaction is justified. The last five minutes were just spent exposing a tactic that has proven to be very effective for conservatives time and time again. It's undeniable that the figure of the "mother with valid concerns" works for them, hence why it comes back again and again in the form of Anita Bryant, JK Rowling, etc. These figures can assuredly think for themselves, but whether they're aware of it or not, they end up being weaponized by the right in insidious, pervasive ways that appeal to the "traditional values" crowd with populist discourse. What she's denouncing is not that these figures are not relevant, but that their weaponization often goes unnoticed. I, myself, hadn't even consciously noticed this recurring pattern before she pointed it out. I think it is important to expose this strategy because it's so easy for so many people to fall for it. To know the enemy, you have to understand the mechanics of their offense at every level. Engaging directly with these figures is fueling their fire, giving them a pathway to martyrdom. Blocking them is diminishing the reach of the weapon in the right's arsenal.

They risk their own life by going through surgery and extreme pain. They even spend all their money and savings on it! Not to mention all the money and health risk to maintain it for years. They clearly dont have dysphoria, they do it just because they want to. Cant the same logic apply to someone wanting to live as the other gender? I dont have any strong opinion on this, im just having fun exploring this topic as I find it interesting. I mean, i don't understand why the experience has to be universal in the first place. Everyone's different, I don't understand not believing that someone has gender dysphoria if they tell me they do.

No, i Just really wanted to stress that I do not see it as a mental illness. I mean I am gay, and being 'non-productive biologically' when it comes to my biological goal to reproduce (as a male) kinda is a disorder to human nature in itself. But these notions all derive from what we deem 'the norm'. Everyone should just live their lives. I am currently struggling to understand the function/need/logic of they/them pronouns but I am aware that my understanding is no necessity in acknowleding people their wishes. Live and let live. Hundred years ago people did not understand homosexuality, yet I am able to live a free life now. We do not need to understand everything everyone does; we should just respect each other and treat each other equally ♥️
