Chris Brown accused of attacking music producer in London

Chris Brown has been accused of attacking a music producer while he was overseas for his European tour.

According to a report The Sun, an unnamed music producer claimed Brown hit him over the head with a bottle several times while they were at a party inside The Tape club in London on February 19. The alleged victim said the artist also punched and kicked him after he fell to the ground. Immediately after the attack, the unnamed man went to the hospital to treat his injuries and reportedly needed crutches to walk after he was discharged.

“It was [Brown] who hit me," the alleged victim told the outlet. "“He hit me over the head two or three times. My knee collapsed as well. He’s making out it was one of his entourage but it was him. I’ve spoken to the police and they hope to resolve the matter soon."

Reports about the incident first emerged last month but this is the first time the alleged victim is speaking out. The music producer also claimed that Chris Brown said he would voluntarily drop by a police station in London to discuss the matter and answer questions. However, the singer did not sit down with any cops and continued on with his tour. He's now back in the U.S.

Since assaulting Rihanna in 2009, the singer has been accused of more than 20 acts of aggression, violence, or crime. As of January 7 of this year, People and Rolling Stone outlined around 22 of these accused acts, more than half of which were physical assaults. Most of those reported assaults were allegedly against women. 

Still, by many measures, Chris Brown continues to have a successful career. Since bloodying Rihanna, Brown has proceeded to be Grammy nominated 11 more times as a lead artist. He won Best R&B Album in 2012. He has gone on at least 4 international tours, each with more than 20 dates.

It’s important to note that Brown’s appeal is not particularly niche. He’s a radio mainstay with multiple Billboard superlatives: in March, he earned his 18th No. 1 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, making him the third most decorated artist there, under Drake and Lil Wayne. To get even more general, by 2022, he had more Hot 100 entries than any other male singer — including Elvis. 

While the ordeal kicked off years of media scrutiny and Brown’s name still can be radioactive on many platforms, beloved and generally uncontroversial stars like H.E.R., Fireboy D.M.L., and Rema are among the dozens of artists who have featured Brown on their songs over the past fourteen years. Just last November, when Kelly Rowland — who has toured and collaborated with Brown — accepted an American Music Award on the singer’s behalf, she combated a booing crowd with praise for Brown. In an interview with TMZ following the ceremony, she added, “We all need to be forgiven for anything that we could be doing — we all come up short in some sort of way.”

This is a repeated sentiment in defense of Brown, who is indeed a talented musician, dancer. But the implication that Chris Brown has made a single mistake is wrong. He has gone on to amass accusation after accusation of endangering the safety and wellbeing of others. Yet, he’s been repeatedly rewarded with adulation and wealth in the face of these reported transgressions.

How do you complain about people not forgiving you for what you did in 2009 and continue to do this, repeatedly, still, over years? I'm all for rehabilitation and not cancelling celebrities for one mistake they've made but he's clearly not the one I'm thinking about.
