The Oscars producer literally told Deadline that they have an excellent relationship with Gaga and her team and understand that making a movie is more important than anything else, especially because their show literally celebrates movies.

How did you guys go 4 whole pages without no one pointing that out? This fanbase, I swear :huntyga:

THIS! Oh my god some people here

For the sake of conversation, let's just assume this is true.

I frankly don't really understand why some of y'all are vehemently defending her and her team in this situation. She knew she was filming Joker at that time, so she easily could've said "no" sooner. There's really no need to wait until the last minute to say something about it. It was just poor communication and it's ok to admit that.

But also, I'm sorry, but I'm so sick of some of y'all denigrating the Oscars and other awards shows as if y'all aren't going to be rooting for Gaga to get nominated, and win, the Best Actress award in the next 2 years. Some of y'all talk so much about how awards shows mean nothing, but then the second they show Gaga a bit of attention, you're all over them. Either hate them or don't, but stop flip flopping every year on these things.

Good for her!
These awards are really trying hard to stay relevant, she is busy and doesn’t need to do backflips squeezing them in right now in the middle of filming.

Nah they always have the best song nominees perform lol it’s pretty typical

Finally someone said it. Ya’ll think putting a performance like this one takes weeks. SMH, some of ya’ll have no experience producing shows and it shows a bit. While rehearsals are absolutely a must, a performance with Gaga next to a piano, singing a song she already knows and rehearsed before would not take over a week to plan. Two weeks tops if we want to be perfectionist. I’m not promoting being lazy and showing up and just do it, but if ya’ll think Lady Freaking Gaga cannot put a decent performance on short notice come on guys. It would be different if we were talking about a song with choreography, pyrotechnics, outfit changes or a new song. But for a song and stage where essentially ALL we would get is her next to a piano on a nice dress….The key here is she doesnt want to. But she could

I mean…she also would have to do costume fittings, rehearsals ( 2 minimum), walk the carpet so that’s another look, be at the show, go to at least one afters. It’s not just running on stage lol it is actually a bit of an investment of time and if she’s short of it and wants to give her best to the movie she’s filming long hours on rn then yeah it’s probably not super doable. You don’t need to have a produced a show to have the common sense that performing for the Oscars when you’re lady gaga is a whole other ball game than just being any old regular degular appearance. She can’t really skip any of those things around the performance either bc these events are all about politics and sh*t. So one seemingly simple performance suddenly becomes a lot more plus tbh rehearsals alone could interfere with her filming schedule AND HMH is hard. you def need to know the space’s acoustics if you’re going to do a song that requires you to SING. There’s a lot of particulars you’re overlooking

Does anyone really believe this story? The Mirror is a trashy tabloid. Making up stories is what they do. Do you really believe that Oscar producers called a trashy British tabloid to complain about Lady Gaga – someone who is a widely respected major star (and considered one of the nicest people in the business). It would reflect badly on the producers and they certainly know that AMPAS members wouldn't like it.

great, now the fans have a perfect conspiracy theory when Gaga doesn't get nominated in the future.

I mean you can know your worth but it doesn’t mean you have the right to make people wait to give a response especially for such a thing. I mean, if you know you’re about to be very busy filming so then you can say no right away.

Is not like she made them wait until last second. There's plenty of time for them but not for her.

True, but there’s multiple sources saying she will attend but not perform, so all the particulars you are mentioning will be done either way. She’ll walk the carpet, meaning she did do fittings (might as well pick a second dress for the performance), and with the minimum 2 rehearsals that would be the window to test the acoustics and such. Im not denying there are particulars that have to be taken into account, I’m saying that if she ends ups going then she definitely took the time to do most of said particulars, but chose not to perform simply because she did not want to (because of her really tight schedule we dont have the exact details or because she has a vision that might require more time that we dont know, or because she just doesn't want to. Either reason is valid). All im saying is its not THAT time consuming as people think. This isn’t the Grammys where you have 15 different performers and 15 presenters with all different sets.

And either way, she can skip the red carpet and just perform. The Academy would probably prefer a performance that would bring numbers than her walking the carpet, if its about politics

ever heard of vocal training?

Thank you! HMH is very hard to sing, it's so high. Of course she's gonna have to invest time to make sure her voice doesn't crack, time which she doesn't have unfortunately because of FAD.

Oscars have done well out of Gaga with three showstoppers, and a facesaver last year. They wanted her again this year, but there was no announcement, so they knew she was only a maybe. If her maybe is enough for them to keep the slot open, that's their call. But maybe means maybe.

Regardless of the validity of the story, I'm intrigued as to why she couldn't plan for doing this performance in advance. Her filming schedule will be finite. And, while she's the female lead, Joaquin is still the true lead as the only leading character in the first movie, therefore, he will be in the majority of scenes and Gaga will not need to film as much as he does. So, it's not like she'll have to devote the level of time that she put into ASIB and HOG. When you're up for an Oscar, especially if it involves Best Song which would naturally mean a spot performing said song at one of the most-watched events on tv, why wouldn't you make sure your schedule is cleared for one night and do it? I don't really see what there is to rehearse extensively. Gaga's a pro at nailing a ballad. This isn't like where she had to practice a different way of singing for the Sound Of Music medley. Nor will it be a performance requiring any dancing or anything other than a microphone. She sang this as the encore to the Chromatica Ball every night, she knows what she's doing. So, foregoing a last minute surprise, my conclusion is she simply didn't want to do this. But why? She requested that all nominees perform their songs when she was nominated for Shallow, why doesn't she want to do her own song when she's nominated again? For someone like Gaga, she should be taking this chance to perform as a massive honour and would jump at any chance to sing for millions, even if it's just for fan service. And let's not forget that it's a great piece of promotion, to reignite interest in an otherwise forgotten song. A performance could turn HMH into a hit. Gaga also doesn't seem the type to be like "I'm not attending if I stand no chance of winning." Then again, she didn't turn up for the Grammys despite 2 nominations, which is very unlike her. It's all very strange. I just hope this movie's worth it because we're starving for new performances from her right now.

I understand she may prefer to keep a low profile this time, not win anything and build up hype and a feeling of "she's earned it" by the time awards season for Joker rolls around and it'll be her third time trying for a Best Actress Oscar. You'll notice that it's extremely hard for a singer to win more than one Oscar. For her to win a second, even for Best Song, was always going to be difficult. So, best to keep quiet for a few years and make them realise she's still serious about acting all this time later despite numerous acting award knockbacks. I do sometimes wonder if the reason she didn't win for ASIB is because voters were ultimately wondering if she was just doing this in hopes of winning an Oscar just to tick it off her bucket list and then immediately give up on it. And not even nominating her for HOG was a further test to see how serious she was. By her third big acting role, it seems clear she's serious and deserves it. At least, that's my thinking. So saying, Jennifer Hudson is a singer and won an acting Oscar on her very first movie role, so there's that. But maybe it's not something the academy wants to repeat too often. Let's not pretend that it's extremely hard for a singer to win an acting Oscar as it is.
