Spotify expands access to controversial mode

Spotify officially announced that it has expanded access to Discovery Mode, a contentious program that gives artists the chance to gain more algorithmic exposure on the platform — through Spotify Radio and autoplay — in exchange for a lower royalty rate.

Artists or their teams can now easily enter tracks into Discovery Mode through the Spotify for Artists tool as long as their distributors are participating in the program.

Managers who are eager to get their artists’ music in front of as many people as possible have been enthusiastic about Discovery Mode — telling Billboard it’s a “brilliant tool” that can yield “incredible results,” for example. On the other end of the spectrum, music industry trade organizations and members of Congress alike have denounced the program as a new digital form of payola.

Spotify has defended Discovery Mode by touting its impact on artists’ streams and pointing to supporters, including TuneCore and Terrace Martin, that offer positive testimonials about the program on the company’s website. “Artist and label teams have told [us] for years that they want more agency in reaching new listeners and driving meaningful connections on our platform.”

Spotify has been quietly emailing artists to tell them they can use the program through Spotify for Artists for several months.
“We’ve been in testing mode, but the results speak for themselves”
“On average, we’ve seen users save Discovery Mode songs 50% more often, add them to playlists 44% more, and follow the artists 37% more. And that’s just what they see in the song’s first month of Discovery Mode use.”

Idg what's wrong with it, sounds like it's specifically for the benefit of artists that release their own music independantly. Major labels have obviously been getting their artists reccomended on spotify radio etc for ages so it seems like this could equal the playing field the slightest amount, unless I'm misunderstanding it

Tidal is owned by private artists not by the labels

Never gonna happen because these days labels are pretty much broke and exist on bended knee to streaming services, brands, and tech corporations.

Artists already make close to nothing per stream. So this will make them gain even less, in return for their music getting more exposure? Wouldn’t that kinda just cancel out? Lol

It wouldn’t even the playing field though. Big artists can do it too. All it means is that now independent artists will be at a greater disadvantage and make less money.

So you have a big star who has a label to give them a promotional budget and then is using discovery mode taking the pay cut because they can make up for it in endorsements, merch, ticket sales, etc. Then you have an independent artist who already makes pocket change off of Spotify streams now taking an even more drastic pay cut to just maintain status quo.

Major labels benefit the most from it. Their artists get the best spots on Spotify queue and gain the most.
here are some examples:
• Die For You (Remix) was added to autoplay (s the first song for many listeners on Spotify queue) and increased by over 2.8M streams in 2 days
• Sam Smith, Kim Petras - Unholy increased by over 1.8M in 2 days (this happened in February, so this large increase was not caused by TikTok or album release)
• Niall Horan's Heaven increased by 1.5M in 2 days
• Sabrina Carpenter - Nonsense increased from under 800k to over 3.5M daily streams in 2 week
• SZA's Snooze increased from 1M to over 2M daily streams in 2 weeks
• Gorillaz, Bad Bunny - Tormenta increased by 1.3M in 2 days
• P!nk's Trustfall increased from 700k to 1.4M dayily streams in a few days after it was added to autoplay
