How big was Lady Gaga during 2009-2011?

I’d love to hear your recollections as to how stratospherically successful Gaga was between 2009-2011?

In the UK, Just Dance went number one in January 2009 and from that point onward she was like a pop culture atom bomb. You literally could not go anywhere without hearing about her latest crazy shenanigans, fashion choices, music videos etc. I was in college at the time and she literally defined that period of my life. I remember how huge the build up was to the release of the Telephone music video. I hadn’t experienced a pop superstar like that in my life (except for maybe Britney Spears, however I was still quite young at the time to fully understand how big she was).

Anyways, I’d love to hear your views.

I mean she had the biggest peak of anyone I remember

She was the biggest in:

- Hit singles

- Album sales

- Biggest tours

- Most award wins at shows

- Media buzz

- Most viewed on YouTube for a short time (I believe she was the first channel to reach a billion views)

Artists can be the biggest in different things but it's very rare someone dominates every single category simultaneously like Gaga managed to!

And thats in general. Here in Canada more specifically her chart history until btw was even more crazy

Just Dance #1 (4 weeks)

Poker Face #1 (9 weeks)

Love game #2

Paparazzi #3

Bad Romance #1 (2 weeks)

Telephone #3

Alejandro #4

Born This Way #1 (7 weeks)

Judas #9

The Edge Of Glory #3

You And I #10

Marry The Night #11 (great by global standards)

From ARTPOP onward tho her performance here was comfortable to the US tho although DWUW did chart at #3

I've been a fan of her almost since the beginning, I was around 12 years old and believe me she was HUGE.

Her impact on media was mind blowing, people before her appeared at gala shows in tank tops and ballerina shoes. Gaga's impact on fashion, music and musicvideos was nothing compared to other artists. She wasn't the first ofcourse but she made the best out of it and she seemed to have fun playing with the dynamics of fame.

People spoke about her all the time, positive negative as well. Hungary is quite close minded but the TV and radio was including her non stop. She was on the news all over, talking about gays and god being her inspiration, she was really young as well so she had the drive to communicate with us on Twitter before other artists, she even checked gagadaily frequently. I think what really made her different is the way she treated her fans, no one named their fans before, the "little monster" and "mother monster" dynamic was what gave this cult (lol) some sense of belonging to a family.

Maybe I misinterpreted your question but long story short, she was BIG. :D

She was HUGE. There was no way to avoid her. She was literally everywhere. One thing that always struck me, and that accounted for her level of relevance, fame and coolness, is that ABSOLUTELY anyone would be asked their opinion of Gaga. Be it musicians, actors, politicians, athletes, etc., it was commonplace to ask "do you like Lady Gaga", "what do you think of Lady Gaga". It was so universal to the point that it was assumed (and rightly so) that everyone had an opinion about her to share.

After the 2010 VMAs at school everybody was talking about the meat dress and whether it was fashion, ethical etc. Even the teachers were encouraging healthy discussion rather than saying shut up and get on with your work

Yes! I remember that too. Random artists at a red carpet or an interview in the industry would randomly be asked "I want to know, what do you think of Lady Gaga" :ladyhaha:.

I can't think of another artist where that question was asked so often all the time

I also remember the 2010 VMAs. When she exited the car the reporter was just like "it's the Lady Herself..." Making a big thing of her entrance like the queen had arrived :applause:

Yes I remember the school discussions too.

She wasn't necessarily most students favorite artist especially the boys. But somehow her releases and videos always got attention and debate anyway more than any other artist

That's different from my school. No one liked her aparently. In fact almost everyone claimed to not like her cuz she was too weird even tho they talked about her constantly

Yet somehow she was the most popular artist and charted higher than anyone else

That tells me a lot of ppl who did like her and listened to her music simply did not wanna openly admit it :rip:

It was like a kind of "shame", "guilty pleasure" that you liked her and her music. She came across as "too gay", or she carried the stigma that was attached to almost any pop artist back then (the idea that she was a manufactured product, etc.). Just think, it was only with the 2015 Oscars performance that she appeared in the eyes of the general public as a talented artist. Until then, only her fans knew about it.
