FfFfFfFF 58,136
Following the news that Russia plans to stage a coup in Moldova in order to oust the pro-Western regime, many voices in Romania and Moldova started talking about the possibile unification of the two countries. In recent days, Mihai Ghimpu (interim president of Moldova 2009-2010), Maia Sandu (current president) and Vlad Filat (former president and leader of the Liberal Party) all touched upon the idea. 1) Mihai Ghimpu had a strongly pro-unification opinion and wrote an open letter adressed to the current leaders of the two countries. According to the leader of the Liberal Party, the only solution to avoid the Russian occupation is the union of the Republic of Moldova with Romania. Full text below with kew fragments highlighted: Spoiler On February 2, 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, stated that the West has set its sights on the Republic of Moldova to be the next Ukraine. In other words, the next target of the Russian Federation is the Republic of Moldova . This was confirmed on February 9 by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in the speech held before the European leaders of the EC in Brussels, explaining that the Ukrainian secret services have a document aimed at Putin's plan to destabilize the political situation in the Republic of Moldova, through the involvement of the Russian FSB, the final goal being the hijacking of democracy and the European course of the Republic of Moldova, through the new occupation of this territory. The very next day after what was declared by Volodimir Zelensky, on February 10, a Russian missile violated the airspace of the Republic of Moldova again. Not a random thing. Similar imperialist declarations from the officials of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Moldova were also made before the outbreak of the war against Ukraine. However, with the arrival of Putin at the head of the Russian Federation, the policy of the Kremlin became overtly imperialist, because it cannot reconcile itself with the disappearance of the USSR and the loss of some territories, occupied by Tsarist Russia in 1812, then in 1940 and 1944. The intention to restore the USSR was manifested not only by the invasion of Ukraine in 2014, but much earlier: by the 1992 war against the Republic of Moldova, resulting in the occupation of the territory on the left of the Dniester and the city of Tighina. The purpose of creating the so-called Moldavian Dniester Republic (PMR) was to occupy the entire territory between the Dniester and the Prut at the appropriate time, as happened in 1940, after Bessarabia in 1918 had united forever with the Motherland. According to the same model, the military invasion against Georgia was carried out in 2008 , also completed with the occupation of part of the territory and the creation of two separatist republics - South Ossetia and Abkhazia. 31 years of the existence of the Republic of Moldova have demonstrated that this state, due to the lack of an economy and energy resources, is in the grip of a continuous blackmail by the Russian Federation, without being able to offer its citizens the security of freedom, peace and well-being . I state these things from my own experience, 18 years active as a deputy, later president of the Parliament and interim president of the Republic of Moldova. In all these years, the alternation of political parties or the change of governments did not bring the citizens the longed-for peace, stability, or prosperity. The same thing will happen with the change of the Gavriliță Government, because, in all the years of Independence, only the corrupt have gained, who embezzled the state's wealth, shamelessly using the citizens' vote and state functions. Today, the Republic of Moldova, which in the 32nd year of Independence did not become a NATO member in order to have a plausible military defense shield, nor did it unite with the Motherland Romania, which has this NATO defense shield, can be invaded at any time by the Russian army, as Ukraine was invaded. But the Republic of Moldova cannot be compared to Ukraine either in terms of territory or in terms of armed forces. That is precisely why the citizens of the Republic of Moldova (apart from the fifth column) are praying for Ukraine to win this war. Otherwise, we really can be the next target. Even if for a second we imagine that the Russian danger is in the past, why must there be two Romanian states!? Why should the Moldovan Romanians, who are part of the Romanian nation and who were torn from it by the force of the Russian army, forced to go through deportations, starvation, Siberian gulags, madhouses, Russification, denationalization, humiliation and poverty, etc. have to go through the same ordeal today? In the situation where Putin's imperialist war is near our borders, and officials of the Russian Federation announce that the next target after Ukraine is the Republic of Moldova, the only solution to avoid the Russian occupation is the union of the Republic of Moldova with Romania. This is the reason for my open letter to Your Lordships, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, the President of Romania and Mrs. Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova, considering that the institutions of Romania and the Republic of Moldova should urgently start preparing the Union of the two Romanian states. The Liberal Party, whose president I have the honor and responsibility to be since its creation, throughout its existence has opted for the reunification of the Romanian space, which provides for the return of the territory of the Republic of Moldova to its natural motherland, while promoting EU integration and accession to NATO. As a unionist party, PL has always understood that our major danger is the Russian Federation, an imperialist state that always dreams of foreign lands, something demonstrated even today by its war against Ukraine, in the desire to restore the USSR . And so that this Russian military invasion does not take place in the Republic of Moldova, the only solution is for its territory to become NATO territory as well. But this change of situation can take place, as I said before, only by achieving the Union's desired goal in time. The Kremlin has always conspired against the unity of the Romanians. But we must pursue our national interests, without hesitation and fear, especially now, when our peace and freedom are threatened again by those who have occupied and humiliated us for more than a century and a half. Dear presidents of Romania and the Republic of Moldova - Mr. Klaus Iohannis and Mrs. Maia Sandu, you will prove a great act of courage and historical justice, if you will bring this long-suffering land and long-suffering wing of the Romanian people under the UNION of the Republic of Moldova with Romania the NATO umbrella, ending once and for all the Russian expansionist appetites and thus ensuring peace, well-being and security to the citizens and from the left side of the Prut". Source - https://infoprut.ro/101058-101058.html 2) Polls show Maia Sandu is highly esteemed in Romania and has a realistic chance to be elected as the president of Romania if she'd run for office. When asked if she will run for elections in Romania, this is what she had to say: "I am not running for any position in Romania. [...] We have important tasks - to resist, to keep the Republic of Moldova on the side of the free world, to bring the Republic of Moldova into the European Union. We count on the support of Romania, the president, the Government and all the Romanians on the right bank of the Prut" said Maia Sandu for TVR. "Unification can happen if there is support from the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and the citizens of Romania, this is the answer. Polls show the support for the idea of union. In Gagauzia, the union is used as a scarecrow by the pro-Russian forces who aim to use the people against the government in Chisinau. We maintain peace and coexistence in harmony ", Maia Sandu also said. 3) Lastly Vlad Filat formulated a strongly pro-unification opinion and condemned the lack of political action in the past: "Unfortunately, time has no more patience with us, with the Republic of Moldova. External risks and threats, the perpetuation of internal vulnerabilities, as well as those created and exploited by Russia at the state level, are increasingly narrowing the options of the Republic of Moldova", Filat wrote. “We have all been wrong, in one way or another, to limit unionism to bridges of flowers and poems designed to soothe the wounds that crooked history has left in our collective psyche. While we still have time, let's at least try to seriously approach, at the state level, this chance because history never forgives those who kick opportunities."
