The youngest ever case of an Alzheimer's diagnosis has been made in China. A 19 year old teenager began experiencing unexplained memory loss at age of just 17 only to get the diagnosis 2 years later.

In addition, many cases of young people getting Alzheimer's (under 40 years of age) is connected to mutations that have been found in genes, in this case, no such mutation has been identified

Alzheimer's is like the illness of the 21st century over taking all others. The trends are frankly worrying.

On my mom's side it also runs super deep with 10/13 immediate relatives older than my mother having gotten Alzheimer's and a few of them having it as their cause of death :duck:

I don't think Alzheimer's is trending up as much as it is science allowing us to simply identify it. We used to just call people "crazy", now we understand more of what it is.

I work in medicine and am a prescriber:

Scary disease but excitedly, we now think at least 40% of all dementia is preventable. Good sleep! Less alcohol! More cardio exercise! There’s hope.

Alzheimer's/dementia as a terrifying disease and one that affects sooo many people. But the future seems promising!

They're developing blood tests that can identify it up to 3.5 years before symptoms start
https://scitechdaily.com/new-blood-test-detects-alzheimers-disease-3-5-years-before-clinical-diagnosis/

They're showing promising results in trials of a vaccine against the cause of it

More research is showing that diet directly affects your chances of developing it, new research points towards fructose... which is in everything :bear:

But here's a chart that can help anyone who has it in their family and is worried

The same advice as for literally everything else healthwise  :huntyga:  very repetitive, I know, but it's something

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

That may be part of it but a lot of stuff that is being linked to Alzheimer's suggests lifestyle trends that are on the rise

So while part of it may be identification a lot of it may also be an actual increase as well

Obesity, sleep deprevation, processed foods, low physical activity among other things have been suggested by many studies over the years to increase risk of Alzheimer's...

Those are also things that started to become more common from the 1950s onward... And guess what? Ppl born in the 1950s onward are now approaching 80 or slightly beyond it

So I don't have a hard time believing there is a real increase. Diagnosis of it is not new, yet in recent years the numbers are skyrocketing

Pretty much. And also, people are living longer than ever so obviously there are going to be a higher incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer's. But it is indeed worrying the way more and more young (compared to the epidemiology) people are getting it.

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

Life expectancies and lifespans haven't increased by such a large amount in the last few decades to explain the increase we're seeing

It's important to understand the numbers not just the superficial headline number

Further improvements were made in minimizing infant mortality as well as other premature deaths due to now better treated desieses which helps bring up average life expectancy. But a lot of people 30 or 40 years ago were living well into their 80s also. It was not necessarily a rare thing

The stuff u guys are talking about like better diagnosis and longer life expectancy may be a factor I'm not saying it isn't, but I don't believe it's the MAIN thing

It seems pretty clear that it's a desiese that has increased in prominence and the number of people it's hitting
