so many of my friends went from "i refuse to support JK, i'll wait for a torrent, this topic matters to me etc" to just straight up buying the game overnight

There's a lot of whataboutism thrown around and I have to say it's not fair to compare something like mobile phones which we mostly need to a purely entertainment based franchise, Both are bad but one is an entirely optional entertainment.

I get that for some it's bigger than just JK's art and they want to separate art from the artist but the harsh truth is that money spent on anything HP related will go towards hurting Trans folk and the only way we can stop that is by showing big companies that we don't support that. Don't get mad at people for rightfully boycotting the franchise, get mad at it's creator for being a bigot.

Sadly Harry Potter is too big and too beloved to fail even if the creator is a TERF. The best solution is to not support bigots but If you really must play the game maybe make a donation to a trans charity or do fundraisers like I've seen some streamers do.

They literally just had to wait a week  My friends aren’t gamers so they’re not playing it, I don’t think they even own a console it can be played on lmao

I’ve seen a few people on Twitter expressing they want to play it which is fair because it looks pretty good but glad to see they’ve waited for it to be pirated.  It’s not that hard to wait a week for people to get their hands on it and crack it

I think what makes me sad is the lack of solidarity in the community now.

When Anita Bryant campaigned against the gays; gay bars stopped selling Florida Orange juice because she was their sponsor.  The sudden drop in revenue caused them to drop her.  Boycotting does work, even when it’s just one community!  The “I don’t care this person is awful, I want the product even if it funds hate against me” attitude means nothing changes.

Whataboutism again.  How many times does it need to be stated a smart phone that allows you to connect, do work, search for jobs etc is very different to a game which is just entertainment and something you can forgo?

Not that it’s a worthy comparison but I also haven’t bought a smart phone from a manufacturer for over ten years.  I always buy second hand - another option for the Terf lovers

Besides, usually voice actors are hired through contracts where the majority of their pay comes from the work they do, not any sales which the game might make. 

I just don't think this thread is gonna sway anybody into having a different opinion on the matter.

It’s a good reminder for what terrible people those that are choosing to buy the game has helped fund though  If it gives them a little guilt - good!

You can't turn to the whataboutism-card here. I think it is fair to question you about your double standards and it doesn't matter if you buy your phone second hand, it was still made (or the majority of the parts of it) using slave labor and so are probably most things you own. So before judging people for playing a video game, check your own contribution unethical practices, thanks
