My parents spanked me till I was 9 or 10 as it was very normal and common in rural Portugal although they did stop not long after we moved to Canada. My grade 2 & 3 teacher also spanked us occasionally even tho it was illegal (but socially acceptable so parents didn't complain). It just made me afraid of my parents and teacher at times it didn't really make me respect them

 

However living in the world of extremes that we do, I think some modern parenting goes to the other extreme and is far too permissive. Not surprised so many kids are the brattiest they've ever been

 

But good and balanced discipline doesn't require bruises

Beating a kid is the "solution" for the lazy and uneducated parents whi can't think of another solution when there's a problem.

Children raised by the same parents with the same style can have very different personalities tho still

 

Environment is a huge factor but kids still have their own minds too. They are not total robots and have some free will still

 

Some kids seem to be naturally more bratty than others and may take longer to learn to calm down.

 

I think especially before the ages of 4 or 5... A parent can be the best in the world, but some children will by nature still be roudy and braty
