But it's very important to distinguish the two things because what Harry gets isn't the same sort of thing as Sam is getting because they're motivated by two incredibly different things.

The point being made in the original source for this I believe is not speaking of general hate, but motivated and targeted bullying for specific things. Under that lens, yes, Harry has absolutely gotten away very personal wise unscathed while Sam has not. They come for Harry's artistic choices for his expression--which is unfair, yes--but Sam is getting attacked for their expression on a personal level, not just creatively. 

They are both bullied and talked poorly of by the gay community, just for different reasons. 

I would say Sam in the overall has gotten to a more extensive and personal degree. The community has been bashing Harry for what they see as "exploitation" (it isn't, but they won't let the fantasy go). They've been bashing Sam for things that are far, far more personal.
