A mother in Miami rushed her baby to the hospital after he was vomiting and loosing weight. At first the doctors suspected type I diabetes which is often a culprit for Simmilar symptoms in undiagnosed untreated babies

After investigating turns out an almond milk diet was the culprit and had made the baby reach an advanced stage of ketosis in which the baby broke down too many of its fats and makes the blood dangerously acidic

After days of treatment with proper formula the baby regained his health and got discharged

The mother also appeared to learn a lesson the hard way after admitting sometimes you hear advice online you think is good and turns out to be harmful

On a related note the doctors also reminded ppl never to do stuff like dilute baby formula to make it last longer as the ratios of electrolytes are heavily regulated to be at the perfect balance for babies. Babies bodies and digestions do not have as much ability yet to adapt to changes in hydration water levels and electrolytes and watering down baby formula with more water than direction could made the babies salt levels and other electrolytes drop too low

Seems like it :madge:

It also has like 0 protein.

U gotta have 0 brains to think a baby can survive exclusively on that :fail:

Didn’t know the issues that would arise if baby formula was diluted. Crazy how the mom thought almond milk was the best substitute. :marges:

To be fair I didn't know about risks of diluting formula either. But I think ppl can be pardoned for not knowing that one 😅

But thinking almond milk will sustain ur baby... I mean come on :madge:

Too watery for my taste. But many ppl love it

But we're talking about living on it. No one can survive for long just on almond milk.

It is quite nutritious on a number of different vitamins and minerals especially cuz so many are fortified but it is not a  complete spectrum of vitamins like regular milk

Since babies cannot eat solid food for the first several months to supplement it... Having only almond milk exclusively wouldn't take long to severely damage your health

Isn't it kind of common sense based on recent events? The formula shortage was insanely scary for a lot of people. If we could have just used almond milk, that whole situation could have been avoided. Also, it's just nut water. Come on.

Funny story. My mom bought baby formula during innitial lockdown of pandemic in a panic buy even tho we are all grown at home

Her reasoning was that if we went post apocalyptic and society stopped functioning for a time u can get full spectrum of vitamins off of formula :air:

I know nothing about babies but it seems logical to me that you shouldn't dilute baby formula. It's not a syrup that will only lose a bit of its taste, it's a product that's essential to the development of the baby.

I think most ppl would of figured it would dilute vitamins and make it less nutritious

But I don't think many ppl know about the electrolyte balance issue. I sure didn't know
