America was in large part founded by Brits themselves. If we are being honest UK should apologize to the Native Americans.

Why should we? The descendants of the Native American’s are not even linked by DNA by this point. It would mean absolutely nothing, if we apologised for every negative thing we have ever done we would be here for years and it would achieve absolutely nothing. We just need to accept our past is our past and learn for the future instead of just ploughing money and apologising for something we have no control over.

Not all individual Westeners are at fault for colonialism. But it's quite a different issue when it comes to the leaders and figure heads of the colonial countries, especially when the colonial power dinamic didn't go away completely to this day (France is still dominating its former subjects in Françafrique, still appoints country leaders and these country still use a French currency tied to the euro instead of national currencies).

The way you completely disregard peoples by simply saying "oh it would mean nothing, just move on" ..Just like Macron, it would mean nothing.. To you.
How can you learn from the past and let people heal if you don't even acknowledge the truth and what really happened ? How can we move forward if we don't teach kids the reality ?
How can you expect the new generations who got their roots from Algeria or Native Americans people to feel proudly French or Americans when you don't even let them a word, recognise past events or their consequences ?

As long as it’s the will of the people

It’s literally meaningless words from a president that inherited a past he had no choice in the matter

And it's no wonder why they are confronted to social issues (identity, french "values", secularism, patriotism...) that he has to deal with today, don't expect people to follow you when you turn them down

Yet, he’s still had no choice in dealing with the matter because you cannot change the past.

nobody blames people alive today for what their ancestors done but generational wealth is real. if you have ancestors who stole wealth from colonized people then you're at an advantage in terms of schools, jobs, just general opportunities (we've seen something similar to this with the recent nepotism babies discourse.) i can guarantee you jamie lee curtises grand children will have no financial problems just like how she started out with no financial problems given the wealth her parents had accumulated.

the immense wealth stolen from colonized countries can be / is passed down for generations in the same way that people whos ancestors had wealth stolen from them are likely at a socioeconomic disadvantage now. people just want to make things right

Ok? And what about descendants from those colonizers who didn’t inherit any generational wealth because their ancestors squandered it away? You can’t expect them to pay too, when they didn’t benefit directly, and that money ran out long before they were born.

sure, you have a some powerful families that can trace their roots directly back to colonization and the slave trade, but you cannot try to blame every citizen of a country today for something they very well may not have had anything to do with and may have even descended from victims of said colonization. That’s the inherent difficulty with painting citizens of a country with a broad “colonizer” brush. America is built on immigrants. My mom’s side of the family trace their ancestry back to indentured servants. Lol you can’t try to tell me they benefitted from colonization in a way that they now owe a check.

Sure, then let's get the U.S to apologize to the natives, China to apologize to much of Asia (including Taiwan) for colonizing them under the Qing Dynasty, Russia to apologize for the stolen land they still control to this day in Siberia and Central Asia, Britain, Turkey to apologize the arab countries for subjugating them for centuries, and the list goes on and on.

isnt that the point?

Colonisation has literally happened for centuries, if France had not colonised Algeria somebody else would have colonised it. As somebody that is a product of the British empire I don’t feel guilt for what we have done, I should not take responsibility for what leaders of yesteryears have done plus throughout the era of colonisation the people had not democratic voice.

you being a swiftie... The joke makes itself lol

Spaniards? The Portuguese?

Oh baby they are. Remember, as well, that even tho portugal's most famous colony was brazil (that has MANY problems due to colonization), it also had several colonies on Africa, and the countries are severely affected by poverty, inequality, and portugal to this day did nothing about it. People complain, and demand, but you might not know because its something that stays as news only in these places. you dont know about everything afterall
