"Canada Needs More Immigration" Says Immigration Minister

Liberal Minister of immigration says Canada needs more immigrants to offset ageing population in workforce as Canada approaches 500,000 annual immigrant targets

 

The minister was not very clear however if by more he was referring to upcoming targets, or if those upcoming targets are still not enough

 

Canadas most recent targets were 430,000 a year which combined with some natural population growth has resulted in the fastest population growth in developed world.

 

In 2025 the 500,000 a year targets come into effect

For what kind of job they need tho ? They keep talking about labour shortages, but in which field do they need immigrants particularly ?

I'm okay with this as long as they are distributed across the country and not just in the biggest cities

The biggest shortages from what I'm aware (tho it will vary slightly from one part of the country to the other):

 

- construction, especially skilled trades like dry wall installer, electrician etc. These jobs all pay like $40/h or more, over $50/h for experienced people

 

- medical field especially nurses

 

- tech sector especially software programers

 

- food service sector (like waitors)

 

It's pretty broad based but those sectors in particular the labor market has been pretty tight (in construction in particular it's a long term issue, not a recent phenomenon. Were always short in construction workers even tho it pays so much but many ppl don't wanna do it cuz of physical labor)

Immigrants usually are but after a probationary period and once they gain permanent residence etc they have a right to move wherever they want. U can't keep immigrants where u send them for more than a year or two

Oh no here too cuz labor shortage is also here. We just have no where to put them

 

But then construction sector has one of the worst (if not the worst) labor shortage so u need ppl for building

They should increase the probationary period or the time it takes for an immigrant to become a PR. This could be done to ensure these immigrants establish themselves in the area they are first placed in. They should also be incentivized to study, work and buy property in those areas. Since doing these things will likely make someone established and stay in a given area.

Meh I don't know. At the end of the day the crazy prices in Toronto and Vancouver and now explosive overall population growth have resulted in a changed trend in these areas ur talking about

 

Smaller towns and lower population provinces like New Foundland, New Brunswick, PEI etc that had flat or declining populations for the last 20 years are finally growing again

 

Even here in Ontario my ex moved to Chatham. It was dead for so long and in like 2017 started booming out of nowhere as people left the GTA for cheaper housing. U just see a bunch of old houses in most of the city that have been there since like Confederation and now suddenly entire new divisions of houses

 

I don't think need to intrude on freedoms to force people to go outside just Toronto and Vancouver. At least for now market dynamics are already forcing people to do that on their own

 

Also this year Alberta was the fastest growing Province, not BC or Ontario

I do think forcing citizens to live in one place is harsh, but I was talking about immigrants/PR like your post mentioned below.

 If someone is an immigrant/PR and they are already forced to live one place for a period of time, we should just increase this time (so they are more likely to get settled there).

Hii, do you know how it works? I mean are the jobs ready or prep by the gov't? I am a software engineer mainly focused on web development and I'd like to migrate
