The gender neutral award gets a gender debate :icega:

Why not just do 50/50? It's not that hard?

Because such parities are never a good solution. What if in a year 2 male albums and 30 female albums turned out to be good? Or 1000 male vs 100 female. This solution only makes sense when equal numbers of men's and women's work are considered. Even then, it's a bit idiotic. Parities in this sense are not good neither in life, nor at work, nor in competitions

I really thought that when they introduced the gender neutral categories, they would ensure that there was a fair representation of women included, even if it was just to make a point after the criticism they received and that many people said this would lead to women being left out of the nominations. And they have just proven those people right. No female nominations in Artist of the Year is an absolute joke.

I believe in removing gender segregation from award shows- I also feel like awards are completely unnecessary and meaningless.

but regardless, diversity should always be represented, in every aspect, in every award category.  Should include more than one gender, race, etc.  imagine if a category was all white people, regardless the gender, people will be very upset.  A category should never be all men or all white or all straight etc.  allow for a larger number of nominees and maybe pick two winners.  No one is better than anyone. Awards are meaningless. Just cancel all the shows lol

according to the article the gender-neutral revision was made because sam smith didn't feel they belonged in either the male or female category and would otherwise be excluded.

Emma Corrin (who is nonbinary) brought this up on the Hollywood Reporter Actress Roundtable. The actresses were asked if they think awards should be condensed to one category without gender. Most of the women (including Emma) joked/agreed they probably wouldn’t be getting nominated or winning if that were the case. Emma brought up a good point that it mostly has to do with what the individual person is comfortable with. She’s fine being considered in female categories because she says the characters she’s playing are female. I know acting is different than the Sam Smith situation, but it’s interesting insight.

In my opinion if categories are genderless and nothing else is changed, then it is not an improvement.

Awards are meaningless but it sure does feel rewarding when you actually receive one

And this is why "gender neutral" categories aren't good. Make a special category for non-binary but don't merge. It'll only end up in fewer women being represented.

IMO the best should be rewarded as so. No matter what the gender, race, etc. By Only trying have “equal representation” by trying to not offend, then you’re basically just handing out participation trophies. I know this now a participation trophy society, but true art, and true rewards for quality greatly diminish in this mindset. There will be years when women dominate every category, and there will be years when men do.

This creates a scenario where society is never happy with any outcome- and we can clearly see it here, on this website.

I get your sentiment but this kind of overlooks the core issue here which is that the voting body itself is biased towards men/against women in general.

If more women than men had been nominated, no one would say anything. Awards should be given for excelence, technique and hard work, not because of the gender/race/sexuality you belong to. When Morgan Piers said merging gender-based categories would hurt women, you all complained, so now deal with it :ohwell:
