Gwen Stefani: ‘I’m Japanese‘

She’s always done her “cultural appreciation” to an inappropriate degree. She clings to it because I guess she thinks it distinguishes her from the pack but in reality it’s so lazy and just proves that she’s got very little inspiration outside of things that feel exotic or novel to her. Idk why it’s been so okay for her to do this for so long. I blame Ska culture in part. Side note, Avril was cringe for Hello Kitty but literally Gwen has made that behavior into a lifestyle and it’s giving identity delusion :selena:

I am honestly still learning how to be respectful of cultures outside of my own.

I do have a question, is this Kylie Minogue video problematic?

1.)Title is misleading

2.) Stan twitter needs to learn that it's not their place to speak out for these cultures, they know what cultural appropriation is and will call it out when they need to.

4th Time Around

These discussions and accusations about cultural appropriation are irritating in many cases. People just look for excuses to accuse it seems, remember a time when someone could say something without a legion of people with too much time on their hands taking issue with it.

Hey, I'm king of the world, you ought to hear my song, you come on measure me, I'm twenty inches long

No, but she's so irrelevant tbh... Idk how is she on magazines, she has 3 hits from a decade ago

People who watch The Voice know her as a judge from that show.  otherwise, correct, she hasn't put out quality music since The Sweet Escape (2006) :(

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

I don’t see what the issue is. It’s clearly in reference to her identifying/appreciating Japanese culture and not her racially claiming to be Japanese

I agree, she just should’ve made it far clearer than she did. Considering it was a huge part of her father’s life, I understand what she means, but her wording was not it lol

It’s easy to just say you revere the culture and wanted to show it to the world :laughga: not “I’m Japanese bc my dad worked for Yamaha” hahahaha the faux pas

Being inspired by culture is completely fine as long as you do it respectably, especially modern culture. That said, no you're not Japanese :laughga:

Gwen learned about Japanese culture when she was young?

Funnily enough, I was learning to keep quiet and think before saying something foolish

Its clear by the way she speaks she only absorbs the aesthetics of each culture she claims to be inspired by. I love her music but like, come on… you can tell her engagement is purely visual (eg. THAT Looking Hot MV)

This is already being taken so out of context my gosh. It was already obvious she was inspired by different cultures, there was no need to elaborate..
