This is already being taken so out of context my gosh. It was already obvious she was inspired by different cultures, there was no need to elaborate..

Some of you guys are really twisting her words here. She’s clearly talking about relating to some place almost like you belong there. It’s not about race or whatever.

The title of the article was clickbaiting, because they made it sounds like she actually think she's japanese, but when you actually read the article, you'll find out she meant something else. She still phrased it wrongly, but she is no way claiming to be Japanese :rip:

ugh I wish it would embed

That video is in a grey area to me, because the artist behind the song (Towa Tei) is Japanese. That said: The 90s and 00s were riddled with artists imitating other cultures. Kylie has numerous video's and performances like that (for example). I don't think it was ever meant to be disprespectful - people felt inspired and didn't think about the negative implications.

I feel like there is no clear "right" or "wrong" answer to this problem, because intentions are rarely malicious. Most of these references come from a place of adoration and the negative effects aren't always visible. Villainizing the artists without a second thought doesn't help the situation.

Looord, one of these threads again - and the woke brigade are in full force. Anyone that thinks her Japanese influencer era was insulting needs to get over it and focus on the bigger issues we have in society. The girl clearly loves Japanese culture and its people and that's what she means in this interview.

I'm British, I don't sit here and get offended by anglophiles who sit there and pretend to put on a British accent, pip pop cheerio, because they ADMIRE it. The context is love and admiration.

For goodness sake.

People who are dismissive of cultural appropriation because "the Japanese think it's okay" are completely missing the point. Japanese people don't know what it's like to be a minority in their own country because there Japanese culture is just culture. They were never shamed for it or had to feel different. It's Japanese-Americans who experienced racism simply because they were living Japanese culture in America. So it's their right to feel protective of it when white Americans swoop in and try to make it things trendy they were always shamed for.

Cultural appropriation is not a thing. Africans and Asians are obsessed with Western cultures but no one ever blames them for cultural appropriation. It is made up sjw nonsense.

There is a difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation, which Gwen clearly is showing the latter. Some people should really read the article and think before jumping on a hate wagon. Yes, for todays standard she may have worded it a bit badly, but still when you read and try to understand what she means, you’ll see that she appreciates and loves the culture. I don’t see a problem with that. It is all from a place of love.

Stefani-san welcome to the weeaboo world. :ladyhaha:

Japan is weird enough that they dont care since they do the same, but western countries make it so serious.
