I'm not sure she was ever personally 'broke' after 2008 but I do believe that she was maxing out her production budgets for a long time and needed to convince her management and label that the investments would be worth it. Especially doing the Monster Ball after the tour with Kanye West was cancelled (how is that even a storyline in her career lol), that must have cost a loooot of money. She spent millions on the stage for the Monster Ball 1.0. And was around $3M in debt. Her parents and manager and label were concerned about how much she was spending but she said she needs to perform and tour for the fans and she guaranteed she’d make the money back. She got Arthur Fogel at Live Nation’s attention and they assigned a contract worth millions, I believe it was $40M. Remember when Gaga appeared in “Who the F*ck is Arthur Fogel?”?
