Former Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau who was the finance Minister before Chrystia Freeland took on the dual role of both Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister opened up on a frank interview why he resigned and why he had a falling out with Justin Trudeau

Morneau says his duties as a finance Minister to have open discussion and serve advice on how to spend resources became increasingly redundant as he was brushed off especially once covid-19 hit where he says he felt the Prime Minister and the party did whatever scored them the most political points at the time and didn't really care to have much to have a proper discussion on how to spend resources efficiently essentially making him just a rubber stamp to make Trudeau's wishes official but with no real actual use

Morneau did have some positives things to say as well saying he thinks the Liberals were able to come up with some very helpful spending to help struggling people very quickly during the pandemic and that that deserves praise, but he also thinks some spending was excessive and wasteful and lasted too long before being tapered off Amid reopening (Canada had a deficit of 20% of GDP and had by far the highest relief spending of any G-7 Nation and among the most in the entire world) because it was thrown too quickly without being thought out in order to make political gains in a sensitive time and that we did not get the best bang for the buck in many cases

This goes to show how much politicians can cover up what they really think convincingly when being questioned about it

I remember when he was Finance Minister and was questioned about how much they were spending and on what he always defended the Prime Minister and gave such detailed answers as to why it made sense and ud think he passionately believed in it as much as his boss

Now we see clearly they weren't always in agreement :toofunny:

Like Biden yelling at Zelensky behind the scenes. :air: What is made public =/= what is going on, this applies abolutely everywhere from our personal lives, jobs etc to politicians and world leaders.

But a phone call between the two leaders in June played out differently from previous ones, according to four people familiar with the call. Biden had barely finished telling Zelenskyy he’d just greenlighted another $1 billion in U.S. military assistance for Ukraine when Zelenskyy started listing all the additional help he needed and wasn’t getting. Biden lost his temper, the people familiar with the call said. The American people were being quite generous, and his administration and the U.S. military were working hard to help Ukraine, he said, raising his voice, and Zelenskyy could show a little more gratitude.

Yeah I remember this :enigma:

There's two sides to this. Ukraine is desperate and of course Zelensky has a duty to his people to do everything he can to help that includes getting as much foreign aid as possible and if we're honest most countries have been a little cheap

But on the other hand he does come across a little ungrateful sometimes. He is under strain and that's understandable but he still needs to make an effort to be diplomatic, given diplomacy with allies now is more important than ever for them

From conversations I've had irl with friends, family, colleagues, acquitances etc a lot of people across political spectrum think we should support Ukraine but a lot also are beginning to wonder how much help can we really give at out own expense instead of fixing the many probelms at home?? I don't think there is a right answer.

How exactly though can a federal government be responsible for people taking advantage of funding such as CERB that was meant to help the Canadian people? The government needs to get funding to people who needed it quickly, they had rules in place for who could apply, how can the government be accountable for the people who fraudulently applied for the assistance and got it? Like how is it Justin Trudeau’s fault? Or in America, how is it Joe Biden’s fault or the democrats’s fault for people who fraudulently applied for small business Covid assistance and other funding to help them through the pandemic? It’s the people who committed fraud who need to be held accountable.

President Zelenskyy is constantly thanking America and other countries for all the aid and weapons to help protect Ukraine. Like what “gratitude” do people expect of him? Not to mention Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are dying protecting democratic values that all of us who enjoy living in a free world seem to all take for granted. What “gratitude” and what more do they want President Zelenskyy to do?

I don't think CERB in itself is what he was criticizing.  It was the scale and combination of everything together it seems like.

More so than anything he seemed to not agree with the amount of time stuff was in place for once the economy was no longer in hard shutdown

As a side note regarding the CERB fraud, yeah maybe it's hard to control fraud when u have to release it in a rush and I don't think they deserve criticism there but at the same time ppl were criticizing the Government like crazy when the CRA started reviewing cases of ppl who didn't qualify and asked for the money back...

Like it's kind of your fault if you apply for a benefit u don't qualify for. I was unemployed right before shut downs so it had nothing to do with a covid shutdown. I had to collect regular EI even tho CERB woulda been higher. Some of my friends suggested I just claim CERB. I chose not to cuz I knew a decision like that to defraud the system would probably come back to bite me sooner or later

I think it's the fact he's been so visibly upset when he doesn't get as much as he hopes for

Also, I haven't heard him constantly thank Nations. He did in the beggining more so but tbh it seems to be more a rare thing now

Huh? I thought he was forced to resign over the WE debacle? In any case I'd take his word with a grain of salt in regards to why he had to go.

Meh, there are bigger wastes of money.

We give them a billion dollars worth of equipment and that's nothing for us but could mean lives saved for them.

If we want to start pinching the US' pennies, let's start with the billions and billions of dollars collected by the richest c*nts right here at home :huntyga:

Or let's start with the military! Just shy of $1 trillion annual budget :rip: that is abso-f*cking-lutely absurd.

Whimsical bitch
