100 Years since the Soviet Union Formed

On December 30th, 1922, the Soviet Union formed. Though initially as a country that guaranteed a "peaceful alternative" to capitalism, it would turn into a dictatorship that cost the lives of millions. While "only" spanning seven decades may seem short in the history field, the country did a lot. From forming a large army in WWII to launching the first man made satellite into space, this country has done a lot in a short amount of time. It is also important to be educated on this countries existence to better understand Putin's more recent motives, such as those in Ukraine.*

“Better understand Putin’s motives in Ukraine.”  There’s nothing that can justify his genocide of Ukrainian people and doing what he is doing to the country and innocent civilians nor to Russian people and how he’s trying to manipulate how they perceive Ukrainians, Europeans, Americans, Canadians, and everyone in between. Someone trying to justify Putin’s attack on Ukraine is in the same category as someone trying to justify 9/11 and what Osama Bin Laden did. Not to mention also in same boat as trying to defend Hitler.

Gurl, what you’re saying is all true but „better UNDERSTAND someone’s motives“ does not equal „justifying those motives“. Of course you have to know what the Soviet Union is to understand why Putin is doing what he’s doing. Doesn’t mean you’re justifying or supporting it. Just like you’re not supporting the holocaust because you know what antisemitism is.

I think one element of Soviet history schools should do a better job at teaching us is the Holodomor genocide.

I didn't know much about it until the war in Ukraine. But the fact that millions of Ukrainians were genocided by Stalin in such a brutal way can help explain the long-lingering anti-soviet sentiment in Ukraine. Sadly, history is repeating itself once again.

I find nowadays it is not possible to try to zoom out on a topic to try and look at more angles and bigger picture of something at hand without getting immediate knee jerk reactions of ppl thinking your justifying something or supporting it

 

It's like when I discuss economy which always has a lot of variables and factors at play into it. Even considering a pro and con of something immediately gets perceived as taking a leftist stance by conservatives or taking a conservative stance by progressives. Meanwhile sometimes i didn't even take a stance whether I like a policy or not, I might have merely mentioned a possible pro or con or whatever.

 

I don't know I don't have any specific examples right now but I think u get what I'm trying to say

Better understanding something doesn't mean justifying it. Putin is literally doing all of this because he wants to build back the Russian empire and seize territory of the former Soviet Union, that's his ultimate ambition. The history of the Soviet Union explains a lot of the modern events.
